Your unit certainly does make money from the sale of popcorn. I've been a scout leader on a Pack and Troop level for several years. We used to sell Trail's End, but over the years, it became less popular due to the cost. It's simply not a good value, and many people buy it simply to support the scouting program. The same really holds true for GS cookies. You don't get a lot of bang for your buck, but people buy them to support the cause once a year. A strong unit can raise thousands selling popcorn, but you have to have motivated kids/parnts to go out and make the sales. A lot of units which have individual scout accounts set up, use this sale to send the kids to resident camp, which here is now over $200 for a week. The issue we have with Trail's End is that most of the money goes to the local Council and not the individual unit or scout. Councils are supposed to use this revenue for the betterment of camping programs, operational costs, etc.. As I recall, the unit keeps about a third of the profit. Our pack and troop are strong and the council is always after us to sell Trail's End simply because they'd make a lot off of us. We opt instead to do our own fundraising and keep all of the profits which we use for our program, including funding for camp, trips, awards, etc..
My sense is that as the economy tightens, a lot of fundraisers are going to take a hit, in spite of the cause. Why buy something from a scout for 15 bucks that you can buy in a store for about half that.

Pimples, overweight, snot running out of their nose, food stains on their shirt.....yeah great marketing idea to use these "cute" kids.............makes me want to buy 12 bushels right now.

Cubscouts can be from the ages of 6-12.
I know from experience that once you are older and in boyscouts, it is much harder to sell because of the reasons you listed.

I honestly don't care. Just wanted to see what people thought. This was the excuse I used to not sell popcorn...but the real reason was that I was lazy and a lot of people get mad when you knock on their door selling something they don't want.

Now the truth be told. Sad thing is that this is the attitude of recent generations. Remember noone is going to just give you a paycheck. This is the lesson that is trying to be taught here. You do actually have to work for what you get.

But I don't want what they give, so why should I work? I already have a clock radio, why do I need to waste several weeks selling something for the benefit of a company?
I do have a job and I have never complained about the pay. It seems as though the general consensus is that we aren't payed enough. Don't trash my generation and realize that this was created for fun. Also, realize that this random string of letters means nothing: "noone."

sometimes volunteer work is reward enough... sometimes it looks better than a fast food job or some retail job on a resume or college application.

Boyscout popcorn sales are definitely not volunteer work, if that's what you are saying???
I do however do a lot of volunteer work and obviously the benefit of a good feeling once done is enough.

i'm also wondering if you were as cute as you thought you were... lots of parents are disillusioned as to their kid's cuteness...then they tell their kids oh yes, you're very cute to keep the kid's self worth up...
maybe THATS why you couldn't sell popcorn :p

Actually I live in a poor neighborhood and nobody would buy popcorn
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I had a lot of girlfriends in Elementary school (if you can call them that
), I guess I was one of those cute kids that grew up looking goofy, you know like Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle.
