I have known a couple people that can identify male from female. After hundreds of attempts my success rate is still about 50%.
I rely on a using a known male Banggai to tell me the gender of a new Banggai. If the male attacks it then it's male, if the male if friendly then it's female. This has worked 100% for me.
Other than that I can't tell unless the male has already spawned. Their mouth never goes back to the original size and it's easy to tell from then on.

This is what I did to pick out my pair. I now have 30+ little Bangaii fry!
And Bang Guy is right, now that the male has held his first batch of fry, his jaw is now larger than the female, so it's easier for me to pick him out now.
