You msaid you tested your water for phosphates, have you ever checked it for silicates?

No, I haven't. I am using RO/DI water though so there shouldn't be any. But maybe......

I was using the same walmart water and just fought with my tank forever and it was not the phosphates but the silicates...just thought i would tell you...I too live with my parents and work hard to support my tank

Walmart's ro water they sell for 25 cents a gallon in the front of the store.....i just control my silicates with phosguard

If you are going to buy a skimmer (I advise you to do so) don't buy the bakpack. Buy something that is rated around 2x your tank size. Invest in a good skimmer and you will not regret it. Get any Berlin, Reef Devil, Aqua Medic skimmers. They are all excellent and popular skimmers incase you have questions regarding their operation you can post it on boards.
