I have four types of Xenia in this picture. Can anyone id them from this photo? I know the one on the far right is Red Sea and I believe I know what the big one right in the middle is (Heteroxenia I think) but not the other two. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Guy

The one on the far left looks like "king xenia" a common name of course, can grow pretty big...but requires more light than your average xenia. I had a chance to get some this weekend but did not know enough about it so I passed.

Hey Bang as long as I got you here.....I am going to be running more of a xenia tank instead of a refugium under my 90g. I am still going to have a little macro with it, but it is going to be dominated by xenia. Any thoughts or warnings?

Ok Bang. I think the first one is a Bali Pom Pom, the reason is it fits most discriptions with the dark tentacle and the white flower so to speak.
I agree with your Hetero and Red sea idenifications.
This leaves us with the unknown one.
Possible x. elongata or the ubellata. I chose the Umbellata.
These are just guesses. How'd I do?

Woh slow down, just the third post I read in 10 minuets or so where all of the sudden everyone is changing emails. I have no prob with it, just commented on it. Then I went back and checked on who was talking to who. You know I feel left out :( thought I was one of the boys. Guess not. :(

P.S. dont let mod status fool you, I just a regular poster. Now that Kip guy goes to work and tunes into SWF.COM. Then he comes home from work and tunes into SWF.COM. Wouldn't supprise me if he uses a laptop on the way home with it tuned to SWF.COM :D I think he is a secret agent man.

My opinion on a Xenia Fuge.
Xenia takes a LOT more energy to produce the same mass as algae. It doesn't go sexual but it has been known to melt down for no good reason.
However, It takes up a LOT less space that algae and consumes 10X the nutrients per square inch (yes, this has been documented).
Summary: If you're space impared it makes a lot more sense to grow and harvest Xenia than it does to try and take care of a handful of algae. If you have lots of space but no money for lighting then stick with algae and a DSB for nutrient export.
I do both and so far it seems to work.

Email? Noticed that we no longer have a place to post our email address? Ever wonder why? Well, maybe its because members, including mods, have been solicited by other wantabe BBs via email addresses posted here. Yeah, what a shame that some people can't just drum up their own business wo telemarking over here.

My guess is the one on the left looks like anthelia. I think your right on the heteroxenia. Can you get a close up picture of a frag layed out to see the polyps and tenical shape? I will need samples of each to properly identify them. :D

Sorry, Bang. :(
You know at point I had a great deal of anthelia growing in my tank, and then they started to decline, then died off. My clownish, though, was really bugging them....sorta an unwelcomed host.
Does anybody have or know of the so-called "blue" xenia? Was thinking of getting some this. How about you Bang, or anyone else? Or this hyjacking again??

I actually had some Blue Xenia. Unfortunately my Yellow Tang took a liking to it and ate it all... go figure

the far left looks like xenia elongata...the far right is red sea xenia, and the big stalk in the middle looks like pom pom xenia. I could be completely wrong, but that is my best ID.

I have some of the "blue" xenia. It does'nt seem to grow as fast as the red sea variety at least in my tanks. But I do like the way it seems to sway in a gentle current, lots of people comment on that coral.

the lower far right picture appears to be standard red sea xenia. from what i have read therre are three classifications and then all those are broken into seas and colors. Cespitularia, Hetroxenia, and Xenia. Julian Sprung's Corals, A quick reference guide has a nice layout and has very similar red sea xenia. Will look it up and try to id others for you after work today.

I looked and could not find close enough match to defiantly ID the others, We where both correct on the red sea. The one on the left appears to be more like an Anthelia which is close relative to a xenia.
