yawn, I still laugh that you moan because an entry level DSLR camera is an entry level DSLR camera.
No i moan cause this site somehow makes it sound like its the best thing out there. There are MUCH better cameras for the same money out there. No one knows the difference though because obviously if you did then you wouldnt act like the D40 is some super rich packed DSLR...
But I give up, no one seems to understand what it is..a cheap entry level over priced and waterdown camera.

that is fine, you keep on shooting with your 3000 dollar camera. And I'll keep shooting with the only camera I have.

you jealous.
Well here are just a few cameras that are better then the D40 or D60 and same price or less
Canon XT, XTi, XSi, XS
Canon 30D, 20D
Nikon D50, D70, D80
any of those are much better and most can be had for around the same price or less...

The lens makes the sharpness and the amount of light..The body is control of the focus ability 100%..if the camera has a pathetic focus system i dont care if you got a $7000 lens it will still not be any wear near as good with something with a much more advanced AF system. but once again you are 50% correct. Go take a something like a 300 f2.8 IS lens and throw it on a rebel XT vs the same lens on my 1D Mark II...the XT would never be able to keep up with the tracking ability of radical movement in fast action. But then you say the lens is all that matters so it should huh
Optics are very very important but they still dont make up everything like you assume
ohh and what is your idea of a fast lens? cause an 18-55 is not
You have valid points here, however allot of people can't spend or choose NOT to spend all the money on a camera they can't understand nor will ever use the functions you mention. I still firmly believe that a D40 is one of the best entry level DSLR's money can buy. It's the smallest and lets think here. Allot of people don't want a camera to do everyday shooting that is big and bulky. The D40 fit's that bill. And as in the line of a fast lens, I shoot my sports with a 2.8 18-200 VR......
Not the 18-55 lens... LOL

the new canon XS is a better choice as it has a very nice laid out for entry level. it is not crippled in ANY area.
Ohh soo you shoot with a lens that does not exist huh. an 18-200 2.8 VR..did you go into the future and get a lens that has yet to be made and something that would cost like 5grand if it did exist. the Nikon 18-200 VR is a 3.5-5.6 lens..once again that is not a fast lens at all.
Since you dont even know the lens you have please dont try and make any more points you cant back up

My deepest applogies sir. My 105mm is the 2.8 my 18-200 is the 3.5 and it is plenty fast for shooting sports......You have a terrific day sport as it seems that unless most here spend high dollar on camera equipment they don't need, you will sound off at a drop of a hat!!!!!
"BACK UP"......

LOL you are just sooo ill informed. Once again your 18-200 is NOT 3.5..yes its f3.5 at 18mm but its 5.6 at 200mm why dont you set your camera to 3.5 and zoom the lens and watch that fstop change as you zoom it. There see you learned something. When did I EVER say you need high end gear..everythin I have recommended was in the same price range as the D40...you just wanna think I say you need high end gear as you say a lens is all that matter trying to say a D40 will be as a good as a pro body.
Now lets see..the Sigma 18-200 OS lens is a few hundred bucks CHEAPER then the nikon 18-200 VR and is optically BETTER. that 18-200 VR has HORRID distortions and is a sub par build quality and is over priced for what it is..My friend has one and I have used it and it is a very low quality lens for the money, Now lets see. there is also some OTHER great glass for others..like the Sigma 24-60 f2.8 can get it for $200 at Amazon and it is OPTICALLY amazing for the price. it pretty much is almost equal on IQ with the pro lenses. then there is for the Canon side the 70-200 f4 and it is a RAZOR sharp IQ, beautiful contrast and AF is lighting fast and dead silent. Once again cheaper then the 18-200. then there is also the Sigma 17-70 lens that is a f2.8-4.5 and is also RAVED about in its optics and has a nice build to it. I ALWAYS, ALWAYS tell people what the most bang for your buck is. So please until you actually know WTF your talking about dont go spouting off. I can go on and on and on about killer gear that is not expensive.
Do you work at best buy or Circuit city or something..You sure sound like one of them guys that try to sound like they know everything to the customer yet give awful information out.

Well for starters I don't work for any electronic store. I happen to work for one of the worlds largest mutual fund companies! Listen, I was in NO way trying to start a camera war with you but you obviously have something against Nikon which one can't seem to understand and quite frankly I don't care to hear this or that any more. A person asked for a decent camera and if I am not mistaken allot of people referred the D40. It really doesn't matter what camera anyone uses. As long is it does exactly what "THEY" want it to do, it works PERFECTLY fine!
I recommend the d40 all the time as it's an easy camera to use for entry level DSLR people. You can ask anyone that is not camera savy that they have NO clue of what options you speak of. This is NOT a bad thing, its a learning opportunity. It's up to the person to peruse this opportunity on their own and not have other people beating up a horse about settings and such. Some of these people want to get a nice camera that will do what "they" want it to do...... They aren't looking to shoot a wedding or sporting event, at least not yet and even if they did they can always upgrade. I mean this is a fight that you obviously are set on winning so I back down clearly knowing that I know what works for me and will continue to recommend it.
I think people need to read reviews on allot of camera websites and make decisions for themselves! To many people act on snap decisions from what people post as far as sample photos on what their cameras have taken. The person buys this camera and thinks they too will be able to shoot the same type of photo. They then realize they should do more research to learn how to actually use the camera correctly. I can take really nice photos with the D40 that others can't using the same exact equipment. I have learned and am still learning. Again, I am not going to get into a continuous argument with you but again, if you see something you want look up reviews on it and see what other people are saying. Don't go by what two people say! Just my 2cents.
Happy Reefing Neighbor!

I shoot with a Nikon D80 and couldn't be happier! It's an absolutely GREAT camera and Nikon, IMO, is way better than Canon.
If I were you, I'd hunt around for deals on the Nikon D40.
I am also sold on the Nikon, I just bought a D40 last month, and it is incredible, I am still learning all the features. It takes amazing pictures.
