Oh to live near the ocean…you can, HOWEVER…
..you don’t know what critter may be living in and on it. As a result you may introduce a very bad disease or hitchhiker into your tank.
Assuming it isn’t against the law…the reef is endangered I think, and they don’t want hobbyists picking it to death. I don’t know about that for sure…it is something I vaguely remember reading about.

There are legal considerations depending on where you are, that is a big one to start. A potentially very very big one.
If you are not in Florida, then odds are the rock is granite or similar, which is no help to your tank really. It is not going to be particularly porous. If you were doing a regional tank then it would be ok.
Run off, pollution, etc is another big issue with just taking rock from whereever.

Nothing wrong with Jersey!!
I guess if I picked some rock out of the Hudson river I would introduce a lot more to my tank than just hitchikers ... lol

I live in the Tampa Bay area off the Gulf of Mexico. No coral around here that I know of but I grew up by the Cockroach Bay estuary and there's a lot of rock with stuff growing on it there, and Simmon's Park once you go out a ways it's all slimy rock with some kind of long grassy stuff growing on it. Oysters, Mussels; all that is around here. Last night on the news they were saying in the Keys they've gotten some coral they grew in a nursery to propagate there.
Ok, I will go out this week, weather permitting, and take pics and pick some stuff up. Tampa Bay is polluted but we're pretty close to the Skyway Bridge.

Long grassy stuff is called hair algae...you do not want that stuff in your tank.

I don't think our crappy rocks are the same as yours down there but I'll check.
I may not even do rocks but non reef types should be ok, like bridge type etc.

I agree... Leave the rock in the ocean alone. Check craigs list. My LFS (which is srtictly SW) sells dried out live rock, they also sell regular live rock and they sell rock made out of cement,(just add some real live rock let it seed and there you go) JMO.

I'm thinking the rock will weigh too much and take up too much room. If I use decorations they're lighter and hollow to let the critters go inside. I can have a refugium and I've got an ugf for bio (Tampa Bay has ecoli right now anyways)

I've been out there a lot but currently am in FL. I suppose it would be too expensive to ship, but maybe not. I'll bet you could fill a big box and ship book rate or something. I can check it out if you want to. Are you near Long Beach? My Fiance's Sister lives there, she could ship it. We plan on coming to Sacramento for Christmas and driving down to Long Beach . I do want some.
Thanks
