I have 3 5# pieces of live rock and i was wondering if it would hurt anything if i broke one? Would it damage my system at all? Thanks for reading.

Take the rock out of the tank, put on some safety glasses and have at it with a hammer and flat head screwdriver. You can rinse the rock off in a bucket of old saltwater to get rid of some small particles.

Only if you did it while it was still in the tank and used a jack hammer, seriously though I have taken large pieces rapped them in a rag soaked with tank water and split them with the ball side of a ball peen hammer you can also not cover then and use a hammer and chisel for more exact cuts but please wear safety glasses if you do

welll to be honest.... im new at this, and i saw some sort of limb creeping out of a crevice in the live rock. I mean its a larger piece and i heard some stars can live in the rock and then grow too large to escape. I heard this from friend of mine, he suggested it could be a serpent star, but none of the pictures of any of the stars i have seen online have resemblembed anything like one. It was a shocker because i have had this piece of rock for 2 monthes now and have only seen this once. I think i might carefully knock a few pieces off to try to discover what this is... bad idea?? good idea??? or doesnt really matter either way?

IMO bad idea. Leave it alone to do it's thing especially if there is nothing bad happening. Again IMO we tend to do too much to our systems some times.

The strange life form creeping out of the crevice is Barack Obama saying "CHANGE" rofl. sorry, couldn't resist.

In all seriousness though, unless you are wanting to aquascape differently using smaller peices I woudl just leave it be, not that it would hurt anything if you broke the LR open, I just wouln't.

Like Vamp said I would say it is more than likely a bristle worm but if you give a little more description of what you saw that would help. Welcome to the hobby where you get a daytime show and a totally different nightime show.

I've taken a hammer to live rock to use the pieces for fragging, but that's about it; imo, the bigger the pieces in my tank, the better.

The only plus side to smaller rocks would be more surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize on IMO
