I have a 55 gallon tank and i am looking at buying an ASM in sump skimmer for it. The two that i am looking are the G-1 and the G-1X they are rated 100g and 150g respectivley. I would rather buy the G-1x beings that it is rated to more and i have heard that you at least want to double the amount of gallons it is rated for compared to what you have. Thanks in advance for you insight.

imo i always would buy a skimmer that is over kill. Of course if you can offord it and those are awesome skimmers. I am going to get the asm g4 protein skimmer.

Yes it is usually best to double the # of gallons it is rated for so the G-1 would probably be good for a 55. You could go with a G-1x if you can afford it though.

ASM overates their skimmer capacity.....A good comparison would be to check out a EuroReef with the same body diameter and pump size and see what their rating is and then compare that to what equals an ASM....

i dont think it is ever too much overkill to buy something bigger....a lot of times you will get a bigger tank and will need it anyway for that...so if you can afford it go biggger.

It's not about money.....You get what you pay for and bottom line Coralife doesn't stack up ounce for ounce against ASM or EuroReef

care to elaborate or explain why they are so much better? I'm always interested to learn why another product line is considered better than another. My Coralifes pullout amazing amounts of DOCS and I've never had a problem

I have used both the coralife skimmer as well as the aqua c remora on my 125, and I actually would rate the coralife a better skimmer.
Just my $.02

Dude you need to do some research on skimmers and the heads to heads that were run and sorry to say but Coralife didn't even make it to signup........They are copycats trying to get on the bandwagon.....I would put an MRC MR1 against any Coralife skimmer and what the Coralife skimmer would pull in a week I guarantee I could pull almost double.......Were talking about a quality skimmer that is upgradeable and expandable as you and your system grows........

So your telling us the Coralife could and would compete with a EuroReef, Deltec, H&S, Schuran, or better yet a Bubble King?????

If we're talking "gunk pulled per dollar", than I absolutely agree the Coralife ranks at the top. Yes I'll admit that in general the Euro, Deltec, etc. are better skimmers, I personally will not spend twice (or three times) the money without getting 2 or 3 times the performance because at some point depending on your tanks load and other factors, the difference becomes negligable if any.

I agree....but when I set up my my next system It will be in the 600-800gal range and I will be going with MRC 3. But for now my coralife works great on my 125.....JMO

i bet my huge jebo pulls out just as much as some of the "top of the line" skimmers! i think its all about what works for you, and ill still stand by my point!

I fail to understand why anyone would want a skimmer bigger then what the tank calls for. It seems to me that if you pull the gunk from the water to fast you also pull out the desireables as well. So if you dose your tank with trace elements one day and the next you are running your oversized skimmer then you pull all those trace elements out quickly as well, but I could be wrong or missed something.
