Does it have a siphon out the front? Can you get a shot of the opening? It won't hurt it to take it out of the water for a picture.

i cant tell if it does or not, i would take it out for a pic if i could find it, its only about half the size of an ant, very small, if i see it again i will grab it.

hay guy. isnt there a snail like that with the siphon that has venom that can kill a person. I have seen on TV about the killer ones but then I have the ones your talking about in my sand bed.
Know any interestng info? Thanks!

the one your talking about is only found in the great barrier reef, no where else, i dont think its them, but yes, they can kill a person just by touching the shell, and you wont live, your dead, period!

yea, its crazy, they have a very long needle like stinger they use to catch fish, then inject the fish with the poison and the fish dies from its body convolcing (sp?) so hard it breaks its own body in half almost. if you are stung you die before you can got to the top of the water, even if its only like 50ft away.

Aren't cone shells quite a bit bigger though, 4-6 inch range for some reason stands out in my mind????
Also, its not the shell that kills you its the dart that they have which they can shoot a few feet. So you don't even need to touch it.
As for diving, always a good idea not to touch anything unless you know for sure what it is, and then well its still not a great idea.

Scott, I wasn't suggesting the snail in the picture was a Cone snail... it's definately not.
The people were discussing a dangerous snail and I was just putting a name on it.
You're right, they have a harpoon that instantly kills their prey. There's enough venom (many different poisons) to kill 50 or more people.

Bang,
Nope didn't mean to imply you had said it was a cone in the photo. I mentioned the size of the cone shell though just as an FYI for folks reading the thread. Certainly though a cone shell would not be the best choice for the home aquarium. (Right up there with the blue ring octo.)
