Can This Break Tank?

Today my brother inlaw came to my house drunk and use his palm of his hand and slapped the glass really hard twice , so for the next 45 minutes me and my other brother in law were arguing with him that he could have broken the glass, but he thinks no way he could break it no matter how hard he hits it with his hands. Is that true?

He most certainly could have broken the glass. You may want to have a little talk with him when he is sober. Why would he hit the glass?

Depends On What Size Of Tank It Is The Bigger The Tank The Thicker The Glass Pluss It Has A Lot Of Pressure Behind It Too With All That Water In It So Maybe U Could

Can you imagine what that probably sounded like to the fish? I think I would have inflicted bodily harm upon him for a stunt like that.

I know someone who had a 120 gallon. Her kids were playing with the dog, swinging a chicken bone on a rubber band. The bone slipped and flew right into the front glass. It cracked the glass. The pressure from the tank water took care of the rest. I was stunned when she told me! I would have been quite upset. I guess it hit it just right.

Sound like he needs not to drink to the point of stupid! He 100% could have broken the tank. That would have been great!! A flooded house and a hospital trip

I would talk with him when he is sober as sugested!
I tell you what as much money as I have in my tank and somebody I don't care who you are hit my tank like that I WOULD NOT BE Having and 45 min conversation with. They would be OUT OF MY HOUSE SO FAST that is for sure!
It is called respect and if he was my in-law he had better get some before ever stepping back into my house!

I agree.....he wouldn't be welcomed back at the house after that regardless IMO, but yes he could have easily broken the glass and most tanks are made with 1/2" glass unless you step up to a huge glass tank, but thickness won't help much with the pressure exerted IMO.

Did you not have a gun nearby? This constitutes use of deadly force IMO

It does in my household anyway.

The pressure is zero (relative to the atmosphere) at the top and grows linearly to be highest at the bottom (if my calculations are right, it's a little under 1 psi at the bottom for a 24" tall tank). I imagine how the glass reacts might depend on where he hit it too--both height-wise and also if he hit near an edge or corner. Hitting it near the top would almost be like hitting it when it's empty. My guess is the worst place he could hit it would be in the middle near the top, and the safest would be near the corner close to the bottom.

My guess is, they didn't take the time to calculate the linear pressure verses the atmospheric weight + psi.....

Be sure to explain it in simple words next time he comes over! "Now Darryl, here's the rules...if you want to hit the tank, hit it HERE..."

My thoughts Exactly

get some pepper spray spray it on the toliet seat wipe the seat gently until you cant see it the let him take a **** that will teach him some respect.
just a suggestion.

Trust me , I was upset. And when he's sober he's the sweetest person I know. This was the first time he ever did something like this. I will definitey be calling him tomorrow to give him a piece of my mind. I told him about the mantis and he thought that was stupid. He hit it for a second time and was like see look at how thick this glass is. I was like instead of loosing a great and out of all my family including my side he's the one that we can depend on especially loosing my 8 year old son two and a half years ago I just walked off because it takes two to argue and went in my room and my other brother in law went outside. After arguing his point to his sef for about five minutes he shut up. You guys really cheered me up. And you probably want to know why Im replying at 438 in the morning? LOL . Well my hubby woke me up because our blinds kept moving. I turned on the lights and saw this huge frog behind the blinds. I have a glass sliding door in my bedroom which looks out to the screened in pool. Im still trying to figure out how he got inside. We have a pool and a canal behind the house, but the pool has a screen around it.We bought this house i August and this is the second one we have found in the house. The other one was months ago in our bathroom. And this is the funny part, my husband is scared of them too, so I had to go wake my mom up to come help get him outside. Now Im awake and too scared to go back to sleep, so I turned to SWF to help calm me down.Ok thanks again guys and sorry for the long story.

When I was 15 I worked in a pet store in kansas city. I watched a kid run his matchbox car or hotwheels car across the front of the tank nothig hard just like he was driving it on the glass. it ended up real bad with his parents buying the tank andd some other things once it shattered.
Kinda weird how he can slap it and it does nto break and a kid can smoothly run a hotwheels over it and wham-o its done for.

right place, right time.
more than breaking the glass, i would have been concerned with popping a seal.
every day, i used to look at my old tank and wonder how this glue is holding in all this water.
