Wow. mine has never opened up like that. I wonder of its because he is up at the top of the tank? Mine actually has stripes in it. They just dont come out in the pictures very well.

I have it in a 92 gallon corner tank with 2x250 halides and during the day it always opens like this. It spreads to about a foot in diameter.

Thats pretty big, if mine opened up like that at would probibly be close to 8". Luckly unlike you i havent had any casulties. YET
