ISTHATRIGHT, do you use carbon bags in all 4 trays? usually its the just one of the bottom trays you leave the carbon in then the other trays you can use whatever you want. In mine i have carbon, a medical stone that is supposed to keep fish healthy and boost their immune systems, a nitrate remover (only if my levels get high), a phosphate remover, and a bio ceramics for anaerobic bacteria to colonize. also just a tip, usually when you change the white sponge pads you only do them one at a time to reduce the amount of nitrogen decomposing bacteria you are removing. i usually change one so it can repopulate with bacteria colonies, then 2 weeks to 4 weeks later i change the next one. this way you dont remove all of your bacteria living in there and risk having an increase in ammonia levels. hope that helps. gluck!

hey bms
thanks for your input,i have in my fluval what came in it. yes i did remove all 4 white filters, but i didn't remove anything else. i figured there was enough bacteria left behind it would'nt hurt. the living critters in it were crazy, all squiggly n wiggly eewww! the 2 bottom containers had carbon n the 2 top had these little whitebarrels. i was told to use clearmax in 1 of the canisters but i read to use caution with inverts n corals ,so i decided not to use it.some one suggested to use chemi pure instead, it safe for eveything. next time i'll change less but all looks ok, didn't loose anything

Next time you open up your fluval wipe the rubber o ring down with vegetable oil, this will prevent it from developing micro cracks.

no problem. what size is your tank? one thing i would recommend doing is removing one layer of carbon if you tank isnt too large and adding either a medical stone (i swear by this stuff--i had a fish that was badly wounded by my powder brown and i put this stuff in along with marine max and i swear 3/4 days he was swimming around as if nothing had ever happened). i at one point had a pretty bad hair algae and red cyano bacteria outbreak and another product i use because of this is i believe called "phos-ban" or something like that and it comes in a little pouch (larger ones for larger tanks) and i rinsed and added it to my canister filter and it cleared the algae up within a week! This may not be the exact name as i know there are tons of phosphate eliminating products out there but it comes in a white jar and is the cheapest by far. maybe like 9.99-11.99 for a jar that will work up to 55 gallons.

i have a 90 n i wanted to switch out 1 layer of carbon n put chemi pure in to make it clearer. i never heard of a medical stone, do you use it only when things are going wrong or leave in as a prevenative? the red cyano i think i had in my 55 fo tank but i just kept cleaning and bleaching my decorations to try to keep ahead of it, i didn't use anything from that tank, rocks or decoration cause i didn't want to get that red algae again, so only transfered my fish n bought lr n ls n started over all new in my 90. thanks for the info
