yep you can dose sugar too. its all very experimental and controversal. It has to be used at the correct and careful dosage or it can be negative. But there have been plenty of success stories. Google it or search the boards here. I know Rotarygeek started a thread about his use of sugar. I think he had mixed results.

We have been dosing for a week now and our nitrates decreased alot. We have a heavy bioload and it has dropped 20ppm in less then a week our skimmer is working so much better since we started. You must have a skimmer to do the dosing if I'm not mistaken. Our corals look healthier as well.

Here's a lot of reading on the subject. I know this works, but not knowing long-term effects, I'm sure not ready to endorse it. I switched from sugar dosing to SeaChem matrix a while back and really love the stuff. Its in a couple tanks I have that have no LR, just coral skeletons that I keep because for nostalgic reasons...besides, I think they're beautiful. But the level of acceptable nitrates in these tanks are much higher than in a reef.
