I heard a horror story of the cleaner eating a coral and an anemone as well *boggle*. Oh well, I hope my Saron (monkey) shrimp don't nibble on my corals. They are impossible to catch and can change color like chameleons.

If I can't catch them I'll just buy something that will eat them lol.

Muhaha! I caught all four of my camel back shrimp, but I had to tear up my rockwork to do it. No big deal though because my new rock formation looks much better!

What is wrong with having shrimp in the tank? I just put a peppermint in mine. I thought shrimp were good as part of the cleanup crew?

It's not all shrimp. Just certain ones. Mantis shrimp, and Camel back shrimp (if you have coral) are generally undesirable.
I bought three camel backs before I knew they were nibblers (although I "ASKED" the LFS dude if they were reef safe)......"Oh, yeah, sure they are".
I think two of them are gonners (mildly relieved), but there's still one left. I'm watching my coral like a hawk, and can't tell if there's anything going on or not. I have a lot of zoos, though, and "some" of them are looking pretty miffed about something.
I've also noticed one of the 3 of my emerald crabs getting pretty rambunctious and pulling on some of my zoo frag's polyps. He immediately met Mr. Algae scraper and was shood off.......much to his dismay.
I know if I put more food for them in there, they would be less likely to do that kind of stuff, but I also don't want my nitrates going through the roof.

My so-called "reef safe" peppermint tore into my florida rics the minute I put them in the tank. The rics won that popularity contest. Now I have a skunk cleaner and a fire shrimp, but no peppermint.

When getting shrimp, do your research. The peppermint shrimp and the camel back shrimp look a lot alike. There are a couple LFS that were selling the camels as the peppermint and telling a binch of people how wonderful and reefsafe they were. A lot of times, when people's "peppermint" tears up the corals, its truly a camel bought by mistake. Study up on your shrimp and hand pick your shrimp out at the store. One store here even has them both mixed together. Seeing as how the lady working there didnt even know what a powerhead was, I doubt shell know the difference in shrimp.... Good luck with the shrimp....
No worries though if you get a bad shrimp you can always get a grouper for your tank... Those are always fun to watch chase those buggers around, especially if they've been eating your coral!

I did a search on this site for camel shrimp because I want to learn more about mine, and I am finding a lot of unecessary negativity.
Camel shrimp are just like all predators in a reef tank.... feed them daily and they won't eat your corals. I have four in my tank and they are not bugging anything at all. I just use this rod I rigged and put a piece of fresh fish near them and they all jump on it.
After eating they all go right back to their rock ledge and don't bug a thing.

i made another post about it previously....
it was a peppermint, i know for a fact it was...
i bought a hammer coral (first coral)
put it in, next thing i know my peppermint comes out of the crack and just starts going crazy tearing it apart.
hammer > peppermint shrimp
unfortunately he died because i didnt put him back in the tank that night in a crate or something.

Yes Stone, I did post that predatory shrimp are unlikely to dine on corals when fed fresh seafood daily. However, I think you missed another post where I said that the shrimp were stressing me out. I removed them due to constantly worrying, not because they were actually eating my corals.

I have never had a problem catching any of my shrimp. The second I put my hand in the tank, they all come on, and jump on my hand for the ride/food/cleaning/etc.
BTW, I have one Cleaner Shrimp and 2 Peppermints. None bother my VERY small xenia frag.

i got a piece of live rock from my LF and a mantis shrimp came in on it as a hitchiker. It is very fast and hides alot. I read on the hitchiker ids that they are not desirable to keep. Any suggestions on how to get it out? I havnt been able to get a pic of it either

i think there trying to catch peppermint shrimp, but the trap can be used with most shrimp. if u want to get the pistol shrimp in there, ur supposed to use a soda bottle with the top cut off (i think) and submerge it into ur tank water and turn the lights off. maybe put some type of food inside to attract them, and if not then there curiosity should drive them into it. then just peek inside with a flashlight and if the shrimp is inside just lift the container out slowly so that he doesnt escape.
