can I place Chaeto in my HOB filter with no light on it? or will it die?

The lamp over my HOB is not on a timer. While on vacation over Christmas for 2+ weeks I left the lamp off. Enough light (from the DT) entered the chaeto chamber to support growth. The lamp only comes on when I remember to turn it on.
Here are some pics...

Any suggestions on a clip on light? Just how much does chaeto need? AND can it be a regular desk lamp, or does it have to be an aquarium light?

I am quite afraid of caulerpa after seeing the tanks where it has gone sexual. I can let the cheato grow until the fish have no swimming space (yes, I let mine grow in the DT) and I won't have to worry about a green explosion. Besides, my yellow tang ate all the caulerpa I bought.

Mine is a clamp on desk lamp (walmart $7) with a common household spiral compact fluorescent bulb.

Email me at socal57chevy @ yahoo.com and I'll send you some info on converting a HOB filter into a mini fuge.
Great concept that I never got around to finishing. I skipped a step and when I turned the filter on some sand and chaeto got stuck in the motor. So make sure you FOLLOW ALL STEPS.

thanks, I'm going to start picking stuff up for my chaeto fuge thing.
Like Jerry said, follow ALL the steps...
Or do what I did and leave the sponge in place and add a clump of chaeto on top of it. I didn't add any sand. Seemed like a problem waiting to happen. I figured the sponge would trap particles and the naturally resulting nitrates would be immediately available for absorbtion by the chaeto. I clean it every 2-4 weeks or so during a water change.
