just get an electronic ballast & overdrive
your NO's,i've got 5-48"40w NO's on 3
e-ballasts,almost the equivelant of 12 NO's.

that souns ridiculous. how do you figure the lights are brighter with the electronc ballast. all the electronic ballast does is use electricity more efficently.

This isn't rediculous. The IceCap 660 that is sold on this site will overdrive NO flourescent bulbs. This has been throughly tested and documented by several independent sources. For an increase of only 25 watts per 40 watt bulb the IceCap will produce about twice the light output from a NO bulb as a NO ballast.
IMO this was a great recommendation. I believe the IceCap from this site is about $180. You could keep the existing bulbs and fixtures and rewire the endcaps to the IceCap for an immediate 100% increase in light.

it's really quite simple,my e-ballasts
will power 4-40w no's,by placing
all or some of the leads on 1 or 2
bulbs you increase power thus wattage,
it will decrease bulb life, but 6500K's are $4
at home depot,ballasts are available
at HD for about $30.

a 6500k bulb isn't quite the right light for a reef tank. it is know to promote algea in the aquarium. you are much better off using a 10000k bulb instead.
