the species of clam makes a difference as well, as does the age of the system. if the tank isn't at least 6 mos old, i don't recommend it as the water isn't as stable as it needs to be for a Tridacnid.

you could keep T. derasa, T. squamosa, or H. hippopus on the substrate or a gold T. maxima high up in the rockwork, but you don't have enuff light for T.crocea or the maxima "ultras". you could probably swing a gold-centered T. maxima high in the rockwork as well.
i'd get a 3" specimen of whatever you get, as babies (<2.5") are a lot more touchy than established specimens. also, i recommend feeding the clams live phytoplankton a couple of times a week. also, clams hate water shifts and don't do well at high temps (keep them below 80*F). make sure your Ca level is 450-475 ppm.

i know folks do it, but i wouldn't recommend a crocea with T-5's, nor would i recommend one as a first clam.
to the OP,
how many Watts are we talking here, and what color temp are the tubes?

stable water parameters r key. r u currently keeping any corals? if ur corals r doing fine and thriving, then keeping a clam is much easier. maxima and crocea need good lighting. 6 t5 bulbs r ok depending on the quality. i hv kept clams (crocea, maxima and deresa) under t5 since i started this hobby. every ones tank is different. what works for one may not work for others. i suggest u read up on clams on line.

do yourself a HUGE favor and get Giant Clams in the Sea and Aquarium by James Fatheree. it has eclipsed Daniel Knopp's book as the "clam bible".
