IF you think like that, you probably shouldn't get into this hobby. This hobby is quite costly. Get the necessary clean up crews, it keeps your tank clean and hassle free. No they don't remove nitrates, but they prevent nitrates from building up since they eat up all the waste. Like it was posted before, $10 you can get a small hermit crab with about 5 snails. Mine LFS's prices went up high! Cause of gas prices. So maybe just one hermit with just a few snails here at my LFS. Diatoms can be caused by using tap water and is this a new tank? It shows up during the end process of cycling. Nothing to worry about since it goes away eventually. My hermits did clean those stuffs off though. :happyfish
