IF you think like that, you probably shouldn't get into this hobby. This hobby is quite costly. Get the necessary clean up crews, it keeps your tank clean and hassle free. No they don't remove nitrates, but they prevent nitrates from building up since they eat up all the waste. Like it was posted before, $10 you can get a small hermit crab with about 5 snails. Mine LFS's prices went up high! Cause of gas prices. So maybe just one hermit with just a few snails here at my LFS. Diatoms can be caused by using tap water and is this a new tank? It shows up during the end process of cycling. Nothing to worry about since it goes away eventually. My hermits did clean those stuffs off though. :happyfish

Please use spell check in the future...we can't help you if we can't understand what you're writing. I agree, if $10 is breaking the bank then you are in the wrong hobby.

sorry if i seemed a bit rude in my earlier post

i would suggest a larger cleaning crew if it was my tank. also remember to test your tank for freshwater contaminates before your cycle is done.
if you look around or experiment you'll soon discover that every hobbiest's experience is differing. generally spend some cash on test kits and keeping water quality genuine. read up here and you'll learn everything w/o buying a book.
good luck and welcome to the world of psychohobbiests again.

to remove nitrates do a water change. don't add any inverts or fish unless your nitrates are under 20.
Don't use tap water, don't overfeed and don't over crowd (have too many fish in your tank),and you'll have less of a problem with nitrates. the more lr, the better.

Shista they are not trying to offend you or get you to quit, but they are right the cleanup crew is one of the most beneficial parts to the tanks survival with out the proper crew you will be plagued with problems and will loose fish so I recommend that you get a crew and attempt to build it up to the proper size for your tank. There is plenty of reading here and other sights about it to help
Good luck

by the way welcome aboard
