ONe of my clownfish died, it jumped over the sump wall and was killed by the pump ht eother day. I will go to the lfs today to buy a cover for it, but i was wondering if it is safe to get another clown? CAuse although my original 2 werent a mated pair they seemed to get along. Do you think the old one will fight with a new one?

I have heard to get a smaller clown...there may be a little aggression until dominance is determined...if you see that happening turn the lights off...that is supposed to help....

That is what happened to mine. What i did find funny is that the bigger clown also seemed to protect the smaller one by going after other fish that came too close to the smaller clown. After a about two weeks, the clowns became buds.

This all depends on species and size...can you give us this info? Example: a big female maroon will seldom tolerate any other clown. A juvi percula will.

When I first bought a clownfish I made the mistake of not buying a mated pair. I have one clownfish (false perc) could I get another one?

Most LFS sell juvi clowns., probably because they can be kept in big herds. Two juvi clowns, of most species, will almost always become a M/F pair.

What if you got 2 Juvi Maroon Clowns would they be ok together of would when the one turned female be too aggressive toward the male and other fish??

They should become a bonded pair. The female will constantly let the male know who's boss and he will learn his place; but they usually become inseparable. She will still be very territorial, will not tolerate any other clown (except her mate), harass fish twice her size, etc. Depending on tank size, she may claim the whole tank as her domain and keep many fish in hiding. Tougher fish that stand up to her will eventually get along. New introductions of smaller or wussy fish will often be killed. (No kidding) Before I knew better (and before I Qtd everything), I had a big female maroon kill another while it was still floating in the bag from the lfs.

i went to my lfs yesterday and picked out a new clown(a smaller one than my original one) and as soon as i put it in, the little guy swam right up to my old one and started following it. They are getting along fine. Thanks Guys!!!

Good to here that they are getting along. Just wanted to add my two cents. If you had the clowns for awhile the larger one will be female and once a clown changes it cant go back. So it depends on which one dies of who to replace. Not saying that all large clowns are female just like srfisher17 said most LFS sell juvi clowns still male.
