Looks like a great idea for the return! As far as caulking goes - figure where the glass is going, then blue tape (easy release) both sides of glass, and then pull the tape. Excess silicone comes out and leaves a cleaner look!

Thanks again for the input Dennis. Looks like it is just you and I on this one. The caulking is done but I like the idea of the painters tape. I will use that next time.
Haven't gotten anything else done. I might try to mock up the return and get it painted this weekend, but work has been crazy. Right now I am basically waiting on the stand to get done. Hopefully another week or so for that. I will talk to the guy later today and try to nail a schedule down.
Other than that, I am trying to finalize the rest of my equipment list so that I can get it ordered.

Right now I really understand the stand thing. Been waiting awhile for someone to finish a stand for my friend. The sump is now done, all his stuff is in my shop, and live rock has cured for 3 months!

I really can't complain about the stand taking too long. The real problem was that the tank took two months to come in (mess up by LFS) and I wanted to see high I was going to need to set the skimmer up before I had a stand built. He has only had my plans for about a week, and I think he said that in about another week he could have it finished up. I hope so. I am getting anxious to get water in this thing. Oh well, it will happen soon enough.

Everything looks great so far.WHen do you think you will get to test the DIY overflows? I didnt have much luck with them when i tried, but it was a half hearted attempt and i really didnt spent much time messing with it.I hope it goes well for you.

Once the stand gets here it will all get plumbed up and tested. I think I am going to go ahead and get an aqualifter pump and try to just use one of them. I will have the second if needed.
I am pretty confident in them with the aqualifter. Should make it a pretty foolproof system. We shall see.

Well I realized I never posted any pictures of the tank after the back was painted so here you go.

So you must be pretty much at a standstill until the stand arrives! Sucks doesn't it!

Yes it does. I am hoping that the stand is going to be ready this week or next. I did order the rest of my equipment last night so that should be in this week. Once I get the stand everything should go together fairly quickly. I will keep everyone posted.

I believe that you could make them whatever size you wanted too. I used one inch pvc on mine. If you needed more flow I think that you could use
1-14" or 1-12". If you want more info on them google diy pvc overflow.

Got the rest of my equipment in today. I decided to go with the new koralia controlable pumps and wavemaker. Other than that it was just an aqualifter pump for the overflow and a few locline plumbing peices. This weekend I am going to try to get my return line built.
I still have not had a chance to talk to the stand builder to find out when I should expect it. Hopefully I will have a chance to call him tomorrow. Oh well, as soon as it is done I will be ready for it I guess.

Well since I can't do much on the tank, I am trying to plan my stocklist for fish. I would love some input here. I do not want to many, 4 or 5 total.
The fish that I know that I want are a pair of Bangai cardinals and a wrasse. I've been looking at either the mystery wrasse or the exquisite fairy wrasse. Other than that I am open to some ideas.
I have always liked purple firefish. Maybe a dottyback (I will not be having any shrimp in the tank due to the wrasse). Anyone else have some suggestions?

Finally got the stand in this week. It has been a hectic week, so I didn't get a whole lot of pictures taken of the progress because I was only able to work on it a few minutes at a time and never thought about getting the camera out when I did have a little time.
Anyway, got the plumbing done and have the tank filled with freshwater for a test of overflow and plumbing. Everything is working well. It has been running for a couple of days and been started and stopped a bunch of times. The overflow has started back up everytime so that is good news.
I am letting the freshwater test run so long because my wife wants to finish off the bottom of the stand with some trim so that it doesn't look like it is sitting on legs. I am waiting on the stand builder to make those peices and he said that he would like to attatch the trim from inside the legs and not use brads from the outside and the trim peices should be done later this next week. I figured that would give me a good chance to check out my overflow and make sure it wasn't going to give me any problems. So far so good.
Here are some pics of the tank filled with freshwater and running.

hi ya i'm actually intrested in this design that you have.
and considing this myself so i'll be looking at this probably everyday lol.
anyway quick question on the intake for the sump are you putting anything to stop corals/anemonies/fish/critters etc etc etc from going in? if so what is it/will it be? ad how will you fit it?
imo this is a very good design though.

Good job on the tank. I am in my buildung stages. Like you return how is it working. I have been thinking about doing a simalier thing to my tank. Only putting it at the bottom with some nozzles pointing up and in different directions.

I am using a screen that slips into the 1" elbow. Got it off an online retailer in their plumbing section, but you could probably find one at your lfs as well. So far the overflow is working well. I did buy a aqualifter pump to make sure that I do not get any air into the overflow so that I can try to only run one. One overflow is keeping up with a Quiet one 4000 pump though with the pump throttled back just a hair.
Here are some pics of the screen that I used on the overflow.

Thank you. My goal for the design on the return is to keep flow behind the rockwork. I am going to let the controlable koralias take care of the flow from the tank.

Well here is an update from this week. Shut down freshwater test on Tuesday and drained tank. On Wednesday the guy came and put the trim peices on the bottom of the stand. I think it looks much better now.
I didn't get a chance to do anything on it until today. Today was spent getting everything back together, rinsing the dry sand and filling the tank with water and salt. I am also going to be ordering live rock this weekend so that hopefully by the middle of the week I will be able to start cycling this thing. Right now I just filled the display tank. I will get that water ready for live rock and mix another 15-18 gallons in my water mixing tub. Then when live rock comes in I will drain water out of display tank into sump in order to add rock and then finish filling the sump with the premixed water.
Enough talk here are a few pics. Everyting is still cloudy, although not bad considering I just filled it a couple of hours ago.
