Collecting Sharks

I was wondering if there is anyone out there who have collected there own baby sharks? Please don't jump on me as I HAVE NOT done this I'm simply just curious. I live on the west coast here in California and on numerous occasions my husband and I have gone to the Marina and while fishing for fish (I don't fish, I just watch) he regualry catches baby sharks. There are so many just about everyone who fishes off the pier ends up with a baby shark. He throughs them and the huge bat rays back. I was just wondering if anyone out there has actaully caught there own baby leaopard or other shark? And what their experience was? There are numerous different sharks and rays that people catch out here.

Thats how about every baby shark you see in the fish store is caughten, wild.. and shipped for up to 48 hours in a dark box. I figure the shark or ray would be better off caught close to the home tank. I wish I lived close to the ocean that would be sooo cool! But I live in colorado so I guess snowboarding replaces surfing and rats replace sharks..haha

I wish I still lived in the bay area. When I was 11 I almost caught a really samll leopard shark that was stuck in the tide pools. When I get a BIG tank I'll definetly go to San Fran(which is about 1-2 hours away) and try to catch some. I know others that have.

Jim what part of CA are you from? My husband and I just moved to the Napa Valley about a year ago. My husband has caught numerous baby sharks right off the Berkeley Marina. It a GREAT place to fish and you never know what you are going to get. The other night he caught a very large bat ray. It was really awesome. I think the sharks are the best though. I have also heard that the Pinole Bay is also great for catching sharks and such. And Pt.Rayes and Bodega Bay. But Berkeley is a sure thing everytime you fish. Sand sharks are also very abundent as well as thresher sharks and an occasional Mako.

I'm from Pacifica but now I live in Sacramento county. Its way too hot here for me, I prefer the fog in the bay area.

I'm pretty sure they're illegal to catch. I don't know why they are so expensive though. They're common in the SF bay.

It's legal to fish and eat them but not to catch one for your aquarium? Sounds like another crazy california law to me!

Sounds cool, I wish I could fit a shark,,, but,, and don't get me wrong, I actually love to fish, ,, wouldn't a shark you catch be unhealthy and stressed?? I mean,, a hook large enough to catch a shark would have to be pretty hefty, and in its mouth would be pretty painful..! But,, on the other hand I've never fished for sharks..

I wouldnt suggest fishing for them with a hook, but scuba dive for them with a net... Thats how I get most of fish for me and my buddies..... Leopard sharks are nothing like black tips ... I know here in fl, nurse sharks are simple to catch....

Carorella, Actually the hooks are pretty small. They are only baby sharks. Catching the big leopards are very easy in this part of the bay as well but for that you need the larger hooks. It's amazing to see just how many people catch. My husband regularly catches at least 6 per visit. A few of those are sand sharks.
