They'll eat things as bit as they are and a little bigger...but certainly not something 4 times their size.
But yes...your Clowns would become a quick meal.
I've kept Painted, Commerson, Wartskin, Nummifers, Striatus...just to name a few.
They really need a species only tank.

i dunno about species only. it would probly be a good tank but you can keep them with other stuff. pretty much anything that wont fit in its mouth or try to eat it is fine.

The reason they should be kept in species only tanks is either they'll eat the other tank mates or, the other tank mates will out compete the Angler for food, because they dont move very fast.
So, yes...if you dont want to end up with a picked on, malnurished Angler, they need to be kept in species only tanks.

I'd like to see the article. Anglers CAN NOT eat things 4 times their size. Will they eat things bigger than them, yes...but not 4 times their size.
Anglers are known to have a very slow digestive process. When they eat things that are too big, the gasses from the decomposing meal will kill the Angler before it can be digested.

Or you could stick-feed.

Even then, it is very difficult. The species that I listed, as keeping, are only a few of what I have kept.
Anglers, while most are difficult to get on frozen foods, dont immediately take prey. Feeding from a stick, you have to "wiggle" it a little and simulate a live fish, etc.
I have tried keeping Anglers in tanks with other fish and while it will work for a while, it's not possible long term.
Here are a few pics of the Yellow Warty and the purple Commersons, that I used to keep:

Not trying to debate but why do you say it can't work long term? I've always had aggressives and sometimes one can't compete (like my sfe now). Even if you use live food, why couldn't you hand/stick feed? Admittedly I've never had one of these guys. Awesome pics, too... why would you get rid of those fish?

Anglers dont swim...they walk. If you have other fish in the tank, it's a on-going battle to keep those fish away from the food while you try to feed your angler with a feeder stick.
Other fish, including Clowns (seen from personal experiance) will pick on Anglers and they're not the fastest fish. With other fish similar in size to an angler, in the tank, it may not happen right away, but they will get eaten. It takes Anglers alot of energy to "lure" their prey and more often than not, they dont catch it. It takes alot of time for them to just get one meal. In a species only tank, they dont have to worry about competition for food and you can take as much time as it takes to feed them, by themselves.
You have to be extremely careful not to overfeed, because of the digestive reasons I mentioned above.
Anglers dont handle nitrates well and require almost pristine water conditions.
My purple Commersons "choked" to death, while trying to eat a Sally Lightfoot Crab, that I was stupid enough to think would be alright. The Yellow Warty went back to the friend who I got him from. At the time, I had 11 tanks set up, and my ex girlfriend constantly complained that I spent more time with the fish then her...so, I thinned out my tanks...and why eventually, she became an EX. lol

Gals before gills, huh? J/K
Seems like a fish that would do ok in a smaller tank. How big do thet get?

Depends on the species. Most, like the Warty, Nummifer, Painted, etc. will get no bigger than 5". Some others, around 7" - 8".
The Commersons, on the other hand, will max out around 13" and be the size of a volleyball.

It seems like it, yes. Just because they write "an article" doesnt mean they know everything.
Maybe you misunderstood the article and "thought" that it said "4 times their size".

Hey, Mimzy...all my pics are back at home, in Chicago and I'm currently in Southern Illinois, at my parents house for Christmas.
I wont have very much access to the pc, while I'm here but I've seen your angler post and would be happy to answer any questions you have and provide you with pics, once I get back to Chicago.
