Not having any luck when I do the CHKDSK/F
it says it cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. It asks if I want the volume to be checked the next time the system restarts. I hit Y for yes and it says it will check it on the next restart. How do I restart the computer without shutting the power off?
Edit: I was able to accest the screen with cntrl, alt, delete. Restarting now.

Yea it has to do the chkdsk after a reboot. You tell it yes to do it at next reboot and then just restart the PC.
It should take a while depending on the size of the disk. Let us know if it finds anything. If it finds bad sectors, it will take longer. If there was data stored on those bad sectors, it would not have been recoverable without some serious work.
Let me know how the scan goes and if you have an external drive caddy for the damaged drive.

Ugg...dude. It never really told me anything, it rebooted by itself but didn't do anything different.
At this point I think I give. Computer: won 2Quills: none
I'll probably just wait till payday and take it to a shop and let them do it. Not that I don't think you can help me because I think you can...it's just that my patience for it is begining to wear thin. And if I continue than I'm afraid I'll end up with two laptops that have broken screens. I can still use the computer with the new drive as is for now. My data can wait a week or two it's not a huge deal. I appreciate everyones help and patience with this. Thanks, guys.

Sounds like you have the laptop running with this new drive and this free verion of Linux. Go to Newegg and search for "USB Drive Enclosure". Here's one for $20 -
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707121&cm_re=usb_drive_enclosure-_-17-707-121-_-Product
Buy one of these, stick this bad drive into it, plug it into the USB port of the laptop (or any of your machines will do), and you should see a new drive (probably E: drive). Copy the files you want off the drive, then either format it to use as an alternate spare, or just pull it out of the enclosure and see how far you can hit it with a baseball bat.

Thanks...I'll probably pick up one of those drive enclosures. That sounds simple enough for me to handle. I know where the shop is that stdreb is talking about, I'll swing in there sometime this week and see if they have one. The friggin reek squad wants 150 bucks to transfere my data??? The baseball bat idea sounds like a good one to me. I think I will end up loading vista back onto the new drive through. If I can still do that.

did you watch the chkdsk the entire time? When it finds a problem it changes to something like "fixing bad sector" with a % at the end. When its done it goes back to the scanning line with its % at the end.
Anyway, get that drive enclosure and you can transfer the data that way. If you do not have vista installation disks on you now, google them and make them. It is not illegal to DL and make these disks when you own a license for them. The sticker on the laptop probably says OEM on it somewhere and this means that the laptop, not you, is licensed to have a copy of vista on it. You wont be able to transfer that copy of vista to another machine legally. If you have a problem finding ISOs to DL for the vista copy, let me know. PM me if you feel it is needed.
Being in texas, dont you have a gun? Why not shoot the drive as opposed to a baseball bat? Then again, you could probably do both once your done.

Excellent, thanks for all the help, Monsi.
It does have a sticker on the bottom that says OEM and something about vista with a bunch of numbers. If I can only get this machine back to normal factory condition and save my data that would be perfectly fine with me. I do indeed have a 12 guage and it's been itching to come out of it's case.

You are the resident arse when you get bored. Dude, you live in the same town as 2Quills. If you're such a computer wiz, hook up with him and go fix the thing.
lol, I was thinking about it. But let it be known, being able to swap an HD is no computer expert, heck even I can do it.

Hey, if you want, pm me your cell, I'll help out. As long as I can look at your tank for a little while...

Hey, I didn't think about that. 2Quills I have a nice clay pigeon thrower if you want to toss it on there. I imagine a 12 gauge could do some serious damage to a small hard drive like that...

Well, if you want it back to the way it came from HP you will probably have to spend some money to have them send you the disks unless there is a download for them. Use your model # and serial # on their website to see if you can locate a download for their system restore CD/DVD. I can locate an ISO (disk image that can be burned with most CD/DVD writing software) for OEM Vista and PM you the link if you would like. If you need help installing Vista, I can help you do that. As it stands now, you need the install software/restore software to put the new drive into an operable form with windows on it. Let me know what assistance you need.

If you don't have you back up disks your problem is going to be getting all your drivers and windows. A shop will be able to load all that back on for you. By the time you get done it is going to cost about the same to DIY as it would to just have it done.

Nope, not true at all. Getting an OEM install disk for Vista is free. Downloading the drivers from HP's website is free. All it is going to cost is time since Corey already has the new HD. Well, there is that external HD caddy that he needs to be able to transfer the data from one drive to another.

I'm working right around the corner from Altex so I'm gonna head over there on lunch and grab the usb enclosure. All of that back up software and drivers is suposed to be stored on the origional hard drive. Which is why hp recomends burning copies when you first set up the computer which is something my dumb arse didn't do. So my goal is to transfer data onto the new drive or wifeys computer and back it up asap. Once I do that I can go ahead and try the system recovery option that I was afraid to do earlier without losing files. If at that point it works then hopefully I can access my origional backup software and drivers...burn them to disks and hopefully load them on the new drive. If not then I think hp wants to charge me a small fee for new back disks. I think.
Hey stdreb did you know tropical fish haven is for sale?

no I didn't, but I haven't had a tank since I've been down here. So I"ve only gone in there twice. I try not to stay long, so I got make any rash decisions. lol
But seriously, before you go spend a buncha money call me. I've got most of what you'd need at work, I wouldn't mind helping out.

Ahhh...I appreciate it. Actually already picked up the new enclosure. It wasn't bad, only $18 and some change. The guys up at Altex were real helpful and I'll definately go back there for my future needs.
Yeah, they're selling the shop. Doesn't bother me too much as they ticked me off the last time I dealt with them. I take my business over to gulf coast reef now. Far better selection of corals and the chick that works there is real cool. Let me know if you're looking for a new tank, I may have a 120g with new custom stand and canopy for sale soon.
