coral banded MURDER!!!!

Okay, my coral banded keeps killing fish in my tank. I have seen him catch fish and had to free them from his clutches. However, I wasnt around when he got this purple firefish or my mandarin. I had to free my mandarin at least 3 times over the course of 5-6 months. I had the girl for over 2 years. I am thinking of declawing my coral banded and just leaving him with his small pinchers. Any other ideas??

Yeah...before mutilating your shrimp, why not take him back to the LFS and get something else?

I have raised him from a puppy. Simply pop the bottom portion of the pincher off and he is no longer a threat and he still can eat and pick at the rocks with his small pinchers. He will just kill more fish if I drop him off for some unsuspecting reef owner to buy. Or even worse, someone will get sick of him and flush em.

That is what CBS' do. You aren't going to change that. Start plucking his claws off, and you are taking away his ability to do what he is supposed to do.

looks like your going to have to choose between satan (cbs) and the fish!
personally, i think CBS are awsome but i have fireshrimp and cleaners b/c they arent as aggressive!
u basically have a Coral banded mantis shrimp

if i had a cbs as long as you have, i wouldnt want to get rid of him!

are you sure the fish wrent dead first and the cbs was jsut scavenging them? i dunno. i would weigh the cost of the cbs vs. the cost of the fish you have lost and then go from there. it would be clear in my mind that if the fish tally that he was killing was more expensive than him, out he would be. as long as you let the lfs know, they can let other reefers know!
good luck

Well buzz, he is supposed to live free in the ocean, but I dont think that will be happening anytime soon. Soooooo, OFF WITH HIS HEAD! Ooops, I mean, OFF WITH HIS PINCHERS. Will update with photos.

WHAT- you are going to rip its claws off because he is doing what comes natural?? Not cool- just take him back- CBS are known for their short temper and agressive behevior- Check my signature line

Try feeding him directly with pieces of fish. Mine is fine with my firefish and gobies unless I don't keep him well fed.

I agree that it is not right to pull his claws off, much like declawing a cat.
Why not set up a nano tank for him? I think that will solve both problems, and, so long as you don't have any fish in it, you don't need much more than a good amount of LR and something for circulation.

Thats why its always good to do your home work before hand you would have found them to be excellent fisherman. Them catching tankmates of that size is common. Pulling of his pinchers because of that would be Foolish................;)

Get some tiny rubberbands and put them around his claws like they do lobsters and you'll be ok:D :D

Well Otto, you asked for ideas, and you got them...not one person here thinks you should rip his claws off. Take it back to the LFS and get a less aggressive shrimp, or put him in a Nano tank.
You say you have an attachment to him. If that's the case, do the right thing for him.

I vote nano or get bigger fish:D
Besides are you going to rip claws off everytime he molts?
Give him his own space....FREEEEEEEDOM!

yes, he will work in a fuge
no, you hould not do this, it is not like declawing a cat, they need them for hunting(even if they do not eat fish, they still hunt), eating and defense
declawed cats should have no need for any of them, this would be more like ripping the arms off of a cat
also, their claws will start to regrow upon first molt
cbs's are notorious for thier temper and aggression as noted(they even attack liofish)
i say replace him or put him in the fuge(alone)

You are 1 sick person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
how would you like it if I ripped off your arms!!!!!!!!
Rather take him to your LFS and exchange him for something else or sell him!
What is up with people to day!

I actually went to my local pharmacist and searched for those small rubberbands for braces. I was seriously considering doing the lobster thing. I am trying to setup an in-tank refuge but havent gotten to it yet. Will let ya know what happens.....
I also need advice on my ghost shrimp. I bought a whole bunch of them for my other tank but the other fish seem to be eating them up. Do you think I should take the back to my lfs or possibly ship them back to their natural habitat via fed ex?
