To Rainbow: Decor? Are you serious? I consider my corals as pets, which it is my responsibility to take care of them and provide for their needs. I wouldn't do the same for plastic.
Joe: Have another one, on me, mate.

For all fairness, fish, although a pet, is treated differently then any other. My dogs, aren't fancied up (other then when my wife tourers them with clothing.... uhh, different issue all together), my bird's cage doesn't have anything to make it look more appealing, but my fish tank, it has to look good. It's not like other pets where we have them for them. Fish and their TANK is for ambiance, they add to the surroundings of our houses. Horrible looking tank with healthy fish, doesn't do the same for the aspect of "pet". So we add corals to make our underwater "decor" complete, to be aesthetically pleasing to our eyes. We choose to add living organisms, which our corals are. I don't add corals to my tank that I don't like aesthetically. So I side with the Lil' man on this one, they are a form of "DECOR".

I still disagree, I think decor is the cheap non-living plastic stuff you can buy on the shelf. Corals are living, breathing, feeding and feeling pets that just happen to look "pretty" in a saltwater tank, whom I will spend money on to keep healthy.

In other words, if you want some decor, do yourself a favor and buy some cheap plastic junk that looks "pretty" and that you don't have to pay to keep alive.

So then classify coral........ if not decor...... then what is it for your tank and home? Do you have live plants in your home (are live plants not decor?)?
So instead of hijacking that other thread more, lets continue this here!

I consider them pets and decor, so I guess "living decor" would be the proper term. I definitely do treat the tanks/stands as furniture in a way, matching types of woods, stains, etc to each room, but my tank inhabitants are pets. Corals are carefully placed pets. We manipulate where they'll be kept based both on what is healthy for them, and what is aestetically pleasing to us.

Your hard headed, I don't plan on changing your mind
. It's just fun to have a good debate once in a while
.
Then Snake rebuttled:
"So then classify coral..."
Coral are cnidarians.

I won't even entertain your other idea.
Yes, I am hard headed, and I AGREE that it is fun to debate. I've learned a lot of stuff from good debates.

I could say that they are "Living decor" but not completely just "decor." You buy knick-knacks and pictureframes as decor, you buy coral for as living ornamental pet.

People don't add ugly "pets", as you will, to their tanks. They add what they like. So if it's not for "looks" why would people pick and choose their favorite to represent their "show case" tank?

1guyDude's opinion:
do coral really feel? Does a plant feel?
Im not gonna say that coral is decor cuz its certainly considered an animal imo just as a plant(living) would be considered an animal!
Save a tree, eat a beaver!
I dont think plants feel honestly... !
I dont think coral feels really that much neither!

Why not? Plants are living and they are decorative.
Also, I take that name calling (as a child would
), as a way of agreeing with me, along with the lack of rebutting my other idea!

Don't get it. People have their tastes. I buy my corals for their uniqueness, color, shape, size, abilities, defenses, care level, light level, and quality. I personally don't like some corals like kenya trees or colt corals. I don't like xenia or anthelia because it grows out of control. Other people love the stuff.
Is your dog or cat a part of your homes decoration? How do you choose a dog or cat? I would certainly say some people do choose ugly dogs.

Plants are living decor. Don't you have to provide them sunlight, water, and fertilizer? You can't just set em' on a shelf like a picture frame to gather dust.
Ah, to me, a little name calling back and forth makes us friends. :D

LOL... if I were to go into detail into how I chose my dog... well.... this thread would be hijacked.

So with this are your saying "corals are living decor?" They need the sunlight, SALT WATER, and calc/mag/alk trace elements.

My point was, it's chosen on personal preference, for a "look" (insert DECOR). See you don't like Kenya or Colts, as a LIVING DECOR. We match our tanks, stands, canopy's to our houses, we make our corals/fish aesthetically pleasing.
Dogs, you don't match to your home, they match a liking in you. I like a dachshund because they are cool dogs, not that they will match my home or add a decorative essence to my home. THERE are PLENTY of UGLY dogs.

From the beginning, I've kind of stated that corals are living decorations, not just decorations. You have to feed it, provide the proper conditions for it, etc. as you would a live animal, but they happen to be ornamental, and pleasing to the eye.
People shouldn't just buy a coral because it's pleasing to the eye. New Hobbyists have to know that a coral is not just a piece of decor, but a living, breathing, eating, defending animal that will die if not taken care of, and a corals death shouldn't be taken lightly because of the conditions of the worlds reefs today.
I love long hair chihuahuas. I don't think I'll ever have another type of dog in my life. Abby, my old dog, just found a way into my heart. :D

I agree with this FULL HEATEDLY! This is the key to all of this! I am glad you stated it, as I missed this fact!
Chihuahuas are annoying and yap too much........... I see why "YOU" like them.
