I've read recently it was less than 15% of hobby fish were still cyanide caught. That said cyanide poisonsing works pretty quickly, w/in th efirst monh or so and usually the fish in question don't eat and get emaciated. If you had your fish for more than a few weeks i doubt they were cyanide caught. I guess it still could happen
I believe its still only used in one locale
Bill- I take it you did Mass spect or GC to show that infact the livers of your fish in question has cyanide metabolites

Do you mean gas chromatography by GC?? Just curious.....reminding me of my organic chem lab classes....:D Good time.....Anyway, I have a quick question. How do you isolate cyanide metabolites from liver tissues? Is there a special way to just extract them and run GC? Curious....

So instead of cyanide, they use mini fishing pole! :D j/k
So what do they use now to catch the fish where they don't use cyanide?

i think they use a big net box thing that they leave in the reef with bait in it so they swim get the bait and there caught i guess.
but poor countrys like the phillpines and guam and such still use cyadine. they use it for fast swimming fish

As far as I know, the only place that is still known to occasionally use cyanide is the Phillipines... Although I have read that the effects of cyanide used in any area can linger for awhile since many fish eat inverts such as sponge who may have some traces of cyanide left in the tissue. This small amount of cyanide then seems to bother the fish once they are stressed from collecting and shipping. Thats why I prefer fish from the Austrailian area and Hawaii. And remember... you get what you pay for.

Actually I believe divers go down with nets in the poor countries. They have like under water boxes for em wen they catch em, and their are holes in the sides for water to pass through. Yer other idea though seems likely enough.

If any *really* wants to know, it might be kind of fun to do some MS or GC. Ship me a sample and I'll get it done...
