Hello all!
I have a couple questions regarding a recent small cyano outbreak in my tank.
55 gallon tank, 3 months old
Water source
Whirlpool RO
Water perimeters
Nitrate 20
Nitrite 0
Amm 0
PH 8.4
SG 1.0245
Lights
2 460 atinic t5ho
1 18k t5ho
1 14k t5ho
All 54 watts
216 total
Stock list
2 false percs
1 cleaner shrimp
1 emerald crab
7 blue leg hermits
10 nas snails
10 cerith snails
1 rogue gorilla crab
Coral
Green star polyps
yellow polyps
Flow
1 Seaclone 100 skimmer
1 koralia #1 400 gph
1 aquatech (penguin) 300gph
1 cant remember the name powerhead for surface agitation
I know my actual turnover rate is good, however there are a couple obvious dead spots in the tank (where the cyano is growing). I am ordering 2 Koralia #3 tomorrow, I should have them by Wednesday.
Until then, I would like to cut my light and feeding schedule down. I plan on feeding once ever other day. The light schedule is what i am wondering about.
What is the minimum safe level for my corals in regards to light exposure?
I am also going to do 10% weekly water changes including sucking out the visible cyano, instead of 10% every 3 weeks.
Does this sound like a good plan of attack? Is there anything that I may be missing?
Thank You!
Will

Dont let it get outta control! We use a product called red slime remover. It is a safe, fast and very effective way to get rid of this crap!

increse your water flow one korallla #1 is not adequate for your tank. Nor is your filtration. Need to monitor your feed habilts and do more frequent H20 changes and what is your light schedule. Increse current to the places more effected, sounds like your on the right track.

If you don't have to add Red Slimer to your tank than I would not. Fix the problem do not try quick solutions as you will end up with more problems. Cynobacteria does not go away that easily. You need to change water conditions, less feeding and more H20 changes.

Light schedule was 1 hour atinics, 10 hour atinics+ 18k daylight, 1hour atinics. 12 hrs moonlight.
I got the 2 Koralia #3's today, I will be putting them in after tonights water change.
I was not aware that my actual filter was not adequate, what is recommended? I can not do a sump at this time.

I say if water isn't splashing out of your tank or knocking things over its fine. Remember a reef deals with strong waves blowing them around. They can deal with it.
