Actually, this is closer than you think. Cyanobacter is credited with being the organism that raised the O2 levels on Earth high enough for Oxygen dependent life forms to evolve.

Yeah I was reading some articles about that. I read that before Cyanobacteria the atmosphere was not what it is now. Without it, earth could have not supported life the way it does now.
That's why this bacteria is very interesting. I guess you could say that Cyanobacteria was responsible for the existence of humans. Too bad some types of it can also be toxic enough to kill us.
