Daddy's Room

Well here we goes nothing. I have been at this almost two months taking my sweet time, since now that I am done with building this room I will have to look at an empty tank until probably next summer sometime while I start getting all of my equipment (after Santa has come and gone).
Okay: 135 gallong tank dual overflows already drilled and will be a reef someday when I grow up. I hope to have as nice of an aquarium as some of the folks here
I painted the background a neptune blue color, and questioned myself in doing so, and thought that I should have painted it black. But now that the room as been painted and I have one of the three MH lights I need, I turned it on last night and the blue is actually pretty nice.
I still need to do some touching up in the room (baseboards, detailing where I got a little sloppy with the paint, and more than likely another coat), I painted last night color: Camel Ride semi gloss from Lowe's
My plans are to get:
2" sandbed
250 lbs of rock
ASM G2 and figure out how do the mod for recirc
3 - 250w MH (I have one at the moment)
sump (leaning towards having a fuge as well)
mag 18 return pump (I already have, came with the tank I got from a LFS that he used as a display tank his previous store)
And a coupe of PH....not sure if I will get tunze or seio

That's going to be a nice looking set up. I have one question as I am planning on adding a tank in my basement when i finish it off. It looks to me that the way you have the tank sitting on your framework the bottom glass is only supported around the edges. Will the middle of the bottom hold all the weight or should there be some more support. As I stated I have no experience with a larger tank and don't pretend to know what I am talking about but maybe someone who has been there can answer.
Thanks

Wow, looks great.
For lights, I suggest looking into HQI double ended Halides. They burn a bit cooler and brighter than standard Halides. Also, since you are going with 3 lights be careful how close you place the third one to the center support beam of the aquarium.

I have 8 - 4x4 holding up the top 2x4's...and those are laid on the top to where the 4" are supporting the tank then I have cross braces everywhere...LOL...so I do think it will hold up fine. I think I may have overdone it with the support, but in my eyes, better safe than sorry. I have seen where some of the stand for even bigger tanks used (what it seemed) less support than what I have on this bad boy. I filled it up with water to test it out and it held for about a week. I think and hope that it will be okay.
Journeyman1...thanks for the tip. I will keep that in mind. I already have one of the lights, but I suppose I can re-sell that one and get some HQI's....

I agree with the better safe than sorry and do not think you can overdo it. That's why I was asking. Sounds like plenty of support around the edges but I'm concerned about the middle of the bottom piece being suspended. I would have nightmares about finding the bottom of the tank opened up like a bomb bay and the LR sitting on the floor. But that's just me LOL. Anyway, you have an awesome looking set up and I only hope mine looks half that good.

Don't ask me to explain it...
The "Oceanic approved" stand I got for both my 210 and 180 has the tank sitting on just the lip.

Well the glass is obviously stronger than I'm giving it credit for. Thanks for clearing that up. Like I said, wasn't trying to be critical just a question that popped in my head when I was looking at the pictures.

KMC, now I am going to have to look at this....I hadn't thought about that since I was using 4x4's and not the typical 2x4's. The support beams are placed 18" apart and thought that the weight/pressure would be distributed evenly. I know there isn't a support beam directly in the middle but with the tank only being 18" deep that what I had would support it fine. The water was fine for a week, but if I am going to add 250 lbs of rock and 120 - 140 lbs of sand...I better take a second look at this...
Anyone else have any suggestions / opinions, this is also my first time doing this...I just ran with an idea I had...

Well, like I said, look at the bottom of your tank. My oceanics both won't sit flush due to the way they are made. The cross beams on my stand are to keep the stand from bowing, they don't have any weight on them.

Thanks 1jouneyman, that is what I am using my cross beams for....make sure the stand doesn't bow or move around or anything. I will have to take a look at the bottom of the tank.
