Ok i wont use all D's for this topic but i have a problem... if you havent already guessed.
My dog has been bad about digging holes. It doesnt occur at my apartment...well since i dont have a yard but im moving back home soon and its pissing off my mother when we visit. I dont have a good way to discippline him since i cannot catch him doing it. What is a good way to stop him from digging holes?

The only way i know of is kind of cruel. I know they make dag and cat repelent. when i was a manager at lowes everyone would buy it to stop other peoples dogs from pooing in there yard

They had a "dog specialist" on the local news. A person called in with the same problem except the dog dug in the same place... her advise was to bury the dog's poo in the
hole.

Digging the dogs poo in teh same place will make the dog want to dig it even more lmao.
when they are gonna take a poo they look for the place where there scent is left at.

Just like figuring out WHY you have algae in a tank and fixing THAT instead of just dumping some algae killing chemical in every week or so, WHY is your dog digging? Dogs dig for exercise, boredom, loneliness, or to escape (usually because of one of the other reasons!). Does your dog get enough exercise? Have enough toys and interaction to stimulate his interest? Is he altered? Is he inside with his "pack" enough?
Fix the problem at the root of it and most of the battle is won. Then consider that dogs do NOT do these things because it amuses them to see steam pour out your ears!! Your dog has a NEED that must be met and it's up to YOU to figure out what it is then meet it. An excellent alternative is to put in his very own digging box then training him to dig in it instead of everywhere else.
Did I mention I'm a dog trainer?
I also show Great Danes at AKC shows hence, the name. I'm constantly dodging dane slobber, dane paws, deadly dane tails, and full on dane flying body blocks that are just his silly way of saying "MAMA YOU'RE HOME AND I'M SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU!!!!!!!!!!" It aint easy either since he outweighs me by about 60 lbs!!
Here at my house we commonly say "dane love hurts" but I wouldn't trade my monster sized doofus for anything

LOL I didnt mean carving the dogs nails out with a butcher knife. I meant take the dog to the groomer and have them trim the nails as close as they safely can

even if this were an option... his nails would still be gargantuan.

my dog digs but i expect it thats what westies do. I think its god playing a mean joke to make an earth dog white. Mine digs up the yard to kill moles sometimes. seen him do that. Plus he likes to do it. he isnt doing it near the fence hes not trying to escape he likes to stick his nose in the fresh dirt smelling it looking for something. And mine spends as much time inside as he wants he has a tunnel through the basement out a basement window to get to his pen.The tunnel is made of wood it runs across the ceiling. some dogs dig you didnt say what kind of dog you have

If you think one Westie is a problem with digging try having 6 miniature dachshunds to deal with. They can turn a yard into the grandcanyon in a matter of minutes.........They zero in on scent for the most part and dig hoping to find what left that scent....Does your yard have moles/voles in it, or squirrels. I can watch a squirrel come out of a tree and play around in the yard, and the minute those 6 little weiners pick up its scent, they dig up every inch of the ground looking for it.........I routinely bury their droppings in the canyons they make and it does deter them in that area for the most part, but does not solve the digging problems.......

Aaaahhh yes, the earthdogs! Yep, forgot to put in that some breeds are just predisposed to it because that's what they were created for! Once again go with a digging box so that you dog can fufill his needs without tearing up your landscaping

Put the dog's poop in the hole when it starts one and it will not dig in that spot. You can also discipline the dog by using a spray bottle of water and mist it in the dog's face when it does something bad. I have tried the 1st one, not the second and it worked for me. I had 3 Dacshunds in a yard once. They are born badger dogs and digging is 2nd nature. HTH, Barry

We had a westie that lived to be 17 years old. God I miss that dog. His name was coconut, but we always called him coco, which made everyone pause to think since he is was white lol.

Hi DaneDodger!
Hey, what area of the country do you show? I don't show personally, but I am active in the Dane world, and know many people who are involved in the ring. We may have some mutual acquaintances!!

Lol good name choices. Norse mythology is quite interesting.
My wheaton scotty that I have now used to perch on the back of chairs and climb onto tables and stuff when he was a puppy, but we discouraged him from that as he got older. He may be a little too fat to do it now anyways.
One day I hope to get a welsh corgi.
