OK, which clam is better? they are both listed as difficult...meaning what?
They are listed as reef safe....would they be okay to have if you have a stingray?

OK, maybe better was the wrong word choice...LOL....so the derasa grows bigger, or needs more room around it?

Derasa grows big & fast. Sucks down Carbonate like an SUV sucks gasoline.

Yes, Derasas get big, so they'll need space. If you put it in your rocks instead of the sand and it doesn't have enough space, it will try to make space.
My 6" Derasa flexed and shifted two 10-12lb pieces of live rock until it was comfy.

Space or light is not an issue, can you put one with a stingray? and I also read if you get one at least 3" you don't have to feed it? So what does it eat?

They're photosynthetic and also filter feeders (they like fish poop).
I also feed my corals & invertebrates (I have a Coco worm, a Maxima, and a Derasa) Marine Plankton w/Cyclop-eeze and oyster eggs a couple of times per week.

derasa is much hardier and easier to keep. they do get big though. dont know much about stingray. the only thing that would concern me is the stingray putting sand over the clam constantly.

LOL....regarding sand, the sand sifting goby is what I would worry about.
So I guess sand on it would be a BAD thing? I have a good place for it that the stingray wouldn't bother...she has her favorite spot in the sand and buries there 80% of the time.

Depends on what kind of Stingray it is, well sort of. Nearly 99% of saltwater rays' will eat almost all inverts. any chance they get. There is an exception here and there most likely; I have just never seen one that won't.

Clams can't really protect themselves too well, regardless of size. It could be a softball sized Blue Spot and a 3 foot Derasa and that tail can still whip it's way inside the shell.
Cortez rays can get as big as 1 - 1 1/2 feet (or whatever it is - smaller geographic locations); and I don't recall an aquarium really restricting their growth. They pretty much live off of inverts, crustaceans, mollusks, small fish. I have never noticed a difference between their behavior and most others.
