Speg-first I want to commend you on making some big changes in your life. Kudos to you. I did want to caution you on those protein drinks. JD gave sound advice and I really want to affirm that to you. When building muscle, you need to supply your body with protein, you are right. But above all, you need to have a balanced diet and that will be your biggest advantage. After studying nutrition with an excellent teacher, I don't buy into the whole supplements craze. Your body will naturally pull from your diet what it needs as long as it is a balanced diet. It will use the vitamins, minerals, protein, carbs, etc..... in a larger percentage from foods than it ever will from supplements. Most supplements give you very healthy urine, if you want me to be honest. I don't want to start a debate with anyone and won't go there but I just felt you might want a little more info. Every meal you eat should contain a protein. It doesn't have to be much but it will improve your metabolism and in your case and goals, help you build muscle. My biggest piece of advice for you is to check out your health insurance policy. Most will pay for a consult to a nutritionist. This will be your best information and the most helpful in my opinion. Also, check into some gyms and talk to others to find a reputable trainer. ONe that isn't just a college student earning some cash. ONe that is someone who knows the ins and outs of the human body. They can tell you how to most effectively build muscle. How much weight to use and how many reps, etc..... I really didn't mean to go on like this but just wanted to share with you what i have learned over the past years.

OK, I guess if I'm am going to try and give advice, I better say what I am doing. Over the past 3-4 years, I have lost a lot of weight. I have not followed any diet program. I work out a minimum of once a day now to tone and maintain my weight but during the weight loss, I would work out atleast twice a day, 1/2 hour each time. This keeps your metabolism at its peak for more hours a day. I am trying to cut back to once a day since I am trying to maintain but it is actually a hard habit to break. LOL While losing the weight, I followed basically a diabetics diet where you eat 5 small meals a day which were about 300 calories each. This again maintains your metabolism. Unfortunately, I had stopped this and felt like crap coz i was just eating once a day. Thankfully, someone reminded me of this and I had to admit he was right.
So that is basically it. Eat healthy small meals and workout. It has worked for me anyways.

I have always had a good amount of protein in my diet and i've always actually ate very decently... but I drank soda friggin SO much and I am pretty sure that was the 'downfall' of my body. I have very muscular but small arms and it drives me crazy :p So I am just hoping this 'whey powder' stuff helps fatten them up some so that I can make them bigger. Worse case scenario things wont work and i'll stop using the stuff :p not like its gonna kill me ;)

If you are looking to Bulk up, then use the protein drinks in combonation with Creatine... use Creatine (either powder or premixed) 2 times a day and work out... you will see results!!!

speg, i know what you mean.. i shouldn't have pop (soda is weird...) at all, especially for my other health problems, but i drink so much of it, and it's a hard habit to stop. I drink it without even knowing i'm drinking it, and then afterwards, i'll stop and say "oh crap!!!"... it's tuff! Especially with soooooo many good ones out there.... *drools*

my dad has always been in shape and to bulk up he uses egg whites and steak. he does this especially after a tough workout so that his muscles have somthing to repair them while he is sleeping. go on muscle magazine's website and they will tell you how to bulk up. i know my dad does maxing but i don't know how you figure that out. but egg whites are the best way to get your protien. low cholesterol and high in protien. just FYI.

There are differences in types of proteins and whey is supposed to be one of the better forms. I think protein shakes are fine if you are trying to build more muscle. They typically are not meant to make a person skinny, hence all the other junk that comes with them.

Speg I really don't mean to go off about this but I want you to have the best information possible. No protein shake in the world is going to give you buff arms. You can't eat anything that will target one area of your body and make it fab. Just like you can't target one area of your body with exercise and burn the fat in that area. The exercise will increase your metabolism but it is up to your body where it burns the fat from. The only thing that is going to make your arms buff is lifting weights, being consistent, and performing the exercises correctly. From what I have learned over the years, you should lift enough weight so that you completely tire your muscles after 15-20 repititions. It is important that you are doing the exercise correctly though or you won't gain muscle and you will end up hurting yourself. You should always give your muscles a day of rest between lifting weights also. This is why people who want to work out every day, do the lower body one day, and the upper body on alternate days. This gives your body a chance to heal all the little rips in the muscle that occur when lifting weights. So you are better off taking a day off from weight lifting every other day. Most importantly, find what works for you and stick with it. Good luck

Have you tried switching to diet? When I finally decided to give it a real effort it only took a few days before I was used to the sweeter taste. Now I tend to like diet soda's better.

you should do 15-20 reps to tone, but about 5 or so reps to gain muscle... So do enough weight so you can only do a few reps.
joe works out his arms and chest one day, then his legs and back the next day, and on the third he rests, then back to the beginning. Make sure you mix it up some, or your body will get used to the routine

Of course you can't get bigger muscles without working out too. But you also can't get them without protein. So it's OK to have the protein shake.
I agree with JD that if you want bigger arms then lower reps of heavier weights is the way to go. And mixing it up is key. When you hit maxes in any area, improving other areas will help overcome your previous maxes.

You might surprise yourself if you stick with it for a little while. I absolutely hated it as well, but not any more. But if you can't have carbonation then this is a moot point.

I have a friend who is allergic to caffeine, BAD!!! So she can never have chocolate and even decaffeinated coffee and pop has too much caffeine in it. Poor girl!!! Now the tomatoes I would have no problem with, I HATE THEM. Can't even stand ketchup, pizza sauce, nothing
