My wife and i gave each other a digital camcorder for christmas. they are saying to check our computer for a "firewire" adaptor or we have to buy a card for it. can anyone take a pic and let me know what it is?

If understand corectly they are refering to the memory card that plugs right into you computer. If your computer does not have a slot for this you can buy a photo ready printerwith this port for your memory card versus a cable.
The top port is what we put our mem card in to retrieve our pics or videos.

i have a memory card slot in our laptop, but this camcorder records (for any time amount) to the digital DV tapes. I'm supposed to be able to connect the camcorder directly to my laptop and then burn dvd's that can be used in our home system. i can record to the SD card, but they suggest using it only for pictures

i thought a firewire port was just a usb port...what does this firewire look like they are talking about?

A firewire is a different type of wire to use to connect devices to your computer. The best thing for you to do is google "firewire" or go to bestbuy dot com and search for firewire. You may need a card for it, but you may already have it on your computer. The pictures of BB or CircuitCity dot com should help you out.
Of course if you had the DVD camcorder................

actually, i looked at dvd camcorders, but decided to go with the dv camcorder due to longevity of the battery, reuseability of the dv tape, etc.
i've gone to best buy's website, and to some others, but none seem to show the card or the connection that i may have already.
the firewire cable is supposed to transfer the digital information 3-4x faster than a usb cable, making copying dvds a lot higher quality. here's my camcorder, the first connection on the left is the firewire connection, middle one is usb, and i think the right one is for earpiece.

You can find the same port on your computer depending how old it is. Or go to bestbuy and buy a Firewire PCI card that goes into a empty bay on the back of your desktop. If you have a laptop they might have one also. When I get home if someone else has not already showed you I will take a pic of it. Our desktop has three firewire ports on the back. They are not that expensive or hard to install.

I didn't read the whole thread so if your question got answered then forgive my redundancy, but here is simply a pic of... a usb port (far left) then a firewire 400 port then a firewire 800 port. HTH
(Dontcha love the holiday jammies, lol)

This is the firewire 400 connector cable...
and then the 800 (9 pin to 4 pin connector)

For the cables, I simply googled "firewire 400 cable" (then 800) and it gave me tons of pics along with companies that sell them if you need the cable and your best buy doesn't have them.

Only newer computers will have a factory installed fire wire card in it, unless you specifically asked for one in an older model they typically didnt put them in.
Firewire cards arent that expensive and you can find them just about at any computer store, circuit city etc...
Here is what one will look like for your tower.. This one is $21.00 and its advertised at Comp USA. The cable is shown above. U can use USB if you dont have a firewire but it only transfers via analog, not digial like firewire would.

ok, it seems my laptop does not have a firewire connection then (thanks tizzo :)
i was looking around, and saw that they ahve those cards that can plug into the laptop temporarily, so i guess i'll have to go with one of those, since i don't think i can permanently add onto the laptop.
the different connections were what was throwing me off. the laptop has the same connection as the left port that i showed a picture of, but i didn't think i could use both.
thanks all :) it's tough being old (hehehe)

Darn it :(
well, it seems my laptop does not have those connections. it has the same mini usb as the camcorder does, but no firewire connection, and no slot to put a removable one into.
now i'm going to have to buy the card for my computer, use the network to transfer to the dvd :(
here are my attachment possibilities:

i was thinking that too, but all the pics on best buy and circuit city show bigger slots. so i figured i'd post the ports i have and see if they are good or not. now, to find a firewire...
