Here is my favorite recipe.
1 pound shrimp, shells off except for two.
1/2 can oysters
1 can clams with 1/2 the juice.
1/2 can muscle
1/2 fillet mahi-mahi
2 large sheets nori, finely chopped to begin with.
3 cups DT's Phytoplankton (or other suitable phyto culture)
1 - 2 cups RO/DI water.
Blend in a blender until the desired amount of chunk is reached. Freeze in small ice cube trays. Repackage in zip lock freezer bags.
It doesn't take much to feed this at all. 1tbsp per 100g or so per night or small amounts daily. You could perhaps put a small cube in the sump and let it melt over time and get sucked into the return pump. Yum.

That's great recipe Seth.
When I used to make my own food I used to use
garlic juice
clam
muscle
thin sliced nori
mysis
fresh batch of brine gut loaded with phyto and selcon
roti
phyto
whatever fish is available in my fridge
shrimp
selcon
and make cubes like you.
Now I just buy Rogger's reef food whenever it's on clearance. I swear to God, this man does not play around with his food. I have seen him make food and by God, I will eat it if I'm running out of food and be happy about it.

From personal experience, I noticed that garlic enhanced appetite so I use garlic juice and I also add selcon to the mix as well. I was thinking of adding amino acid as well but it was getting too expensive and these buggers were eating better then me lol.

Mine was very similar to yours except not so specific. Mostly whatever seafood was on sale. Squid, Scallops, Mackerel & wild Salmon was a staple. Careful with the farm raised Shrimp, some are freshwater (maybe most??) and score low for nutritional needs for saltwater fish. Nori & Laver are great. I would freeze everything to make it easy to grind up and then blend with RO water & Cod Liver Oil before putting into flat ziplocks or ice cube trays.

Thats a good idea, thanks Bang.
I didn't know that about the shrimp. I thought all store bought shrimp were all saltwater.

So, if you don't make it shrimp based, what would your base be? surly not something fatty like oysters or salmon?

Huh, I've never heard of cod oil being used in fish food. Will have to try that. Any particular place to get it? Any particular type?
BTW nice job Seth and Richard getting these forums started again. I've been trying too. They've been SO SLOW!!!!
And the other richard needs to make his build faster! lol!

during some of my studies this summer, I decided to run a little experiement to confirm a few things. I mostly use Fish oil gel caps, poke a whole in the gel cap and squeeze the oil. Checking on several aspects and may post results in a few weeks or months.
I would be very careful Traveler in putting any oil in your system. Just a thought for ya,

Yeah, lots of oil can cause major skimmer problems and bacterial blooms, in my experience. Also, if you feed a lot of fatty foods to fish, such as oysters, you can cause them to get fatty liver disease... So, I try to stay away from a lot of fatty foods in my DIY fish food.
White fish... hmm. I didn't think of that. I've heard of roe being used, but I can never seem to find it in the store.

Lol I use salmon in my mixture anyway whenever I DIY the fish food so I guess I wouldn't have to add any extra oil. Thanks yall.

I get Roe from my LFS, $9.99. The fish and some of the corals love them. They literally go crazy and jump for it. My poor trigger has no clue what going on. Lol!
Oysters containing alot of Lipids (fat) is a misconception. Read the following.
http://www.oysterfarm.com/content/oyster_nutrition/
Raw oysters have a protein content of about 9 percent and a fat content of less than 2 percent. One-half pound of raw oysters contains about 150 calories. The cholesterol content of oysters is 50 milligrams/100 grams of meat, and the sodium content is 109 milligrams/100 grams. Oysters are also very high in iron content.

Do you have some info on the fatty liver disease? I had thought that was caused by the wrong fats (feeding goldfish) not too much fat.
