About to close the deal on this eel and hope to have it delivered in a week or so. Claimed to be a Jap, but possibly a Hawaiian Male.
Can anybody id? Pretty sure he is a Jap.

I have seen a few Japanese and it does not look much like the ones I have seen. I would lean more to a Hawaiian male than Japanese.
Nonetheless, beautiful.
What the heck is it doing in a tank with a tiny tomato clown?

Tough call.
Body color, I'd say definate Japanese. Face color, I'd lean more towards Hawaiian, due to the lighter orange/red. Most Japanese have dark red, to maroon, striping.
Overall, my opinion is that it's a Japanese.
Good lookin' fish, either way! I'm really gonna miss my girl!

It is a tough call..For me..Face says Jap, body says Hawaiian.
I'm a phone call away from making him/her mine. But don't want to sell myself short. They claim it as a Jap for a fair price, but even as a Hawaiian it's fair.
But as I have never paid "This much" for anyfish I want to make 100% that I am getting the best

They claim 2.5 - 3' but I think it's probably about 2' as these pics are of it in a 72g bow front.
They claim to have had it for 1.5 yrs.

I am in the market for one as well. I want a small one. Tough to tell unless your source is reliable. If the price is right I say go for it. Tim

Typical price...$999.99
But as they have had him for so long and seem to have him eating lots of frozen & raw stuff I think I'm gonna grab him.

That's really not a bad price. It's been in captivity for a while, eating really well and not killing all tank mates. That, in itself, is worth more than the price you're paying.

Any other thoughts if this guy is a Jap or a Haw?
I'm about to pull the trigger and get it. Claims to be just over 2' eats every other day hand fed shrimp and squid and lives peacefully with other fish. Has been in tank at shop for 8 months to 1 yr.
I am on the fence...darker body says Jap, but faded stripes and washed out orange head say Hawaiian.
Any way to know for sure?

No way to know for sure, no.
I say go for it.
Done. You know AW2 your input has been invaluable as not too many own these guys and info is spotty at best. I was real worried about how "Fragile" these guys were as I had read others say they were short lived or died suddenly, but your success long term help me make my decesion.
I'll post some of my own pics when I get him in. Can't wait

Thanks.

Hey where did you get him from? Like I said I am in the market for one as well, but a bit smaller. I posted a thread in the fish forums and hopefully AW2 responds and gives me all the info. Are you going to be keeping the dragon with your Millaris? I have a Millaris, Meletremus, and a Snowflake. The Meletremus is definately going to be removed and the snowflake as well. Considering keeping the Millaris with the Dragon. Bad Idea? Tim

I found him in Michigan. I have a local shop thats actually a nursery/fish store, don't ask

They have 6 Hawaiians in a outdoor pond in the green house. Ft Washington, MD called Russen Nursery I think. 1250 each or two for 2000. These have more white.
It seems the season for rhem is Sept-Jan at that other web shop with a divers den.
I'll be keeping mine alone because it only a 75g tank, butI have seen pics of them with a Goldentail and AW2 kept his with a whitemouth (but thats a BIG 40" eel).
I personally wouldn't risk my golden eel. Mine is moving in with my SFE in a 240g.

Keep in mind, that all info I have given over the years was with a long term captive specimen. I bought her aprox. 7 years ago, from a guy in Chicago, who'd had her since she was aprox. 14" long. How many years he'd had her, I can't remember.
There may be a lot of truth to the guys that tell you they're highly aggressive, when they first get them and that would mainly be due to the fact they're small juveniles. As with any small, wild animal, they're gonna instinctively be aggressive. I just bought a 14" - 16" hatchling Burmese Python and can't take him out with getting tagged at least 5 times. It's just baby nature.
There may also be truth to the statements flying around that they don't do well, when first put into captivity...I'm not sure. The guy I'm trading mine to has had two juveniles in the past year. He still has one and the other died due to a pump malfunctioning and spilling oil into the tank.
When it comes to being kept with other Morays, I wouldn't have a problem keeping an established one with any Moray. From all accounts I've read, they're not much of an eel eater...but, that's all just my opinion and done so at your own risk. When I first got mine, she went into the tank with a well established Whitemouth, who tried to show her who was boss. It took about 20 min, of her not backing down, before he knew who wore the pants.
That 6 Dragons, in an outdoor pond sounds like I'd be in heaven, if I saw it and would probably set up a tent, next to the pond and only leave if forced. I'll eventually have more Dragons...that's why I'm not too upset about letting mine go.
Anything else I can help with, don't hesitate to ask, guys.

Thanks. Do you happen to have links to any of your threads over the years discussing the eel. I have been keeping fish fro over 20 years and have yet to keep a dragon. So know my mind is set on learning about this amazing animal. Thanks Tim

You honestly won't find much about them...especially anyone who knows much about keeping them in captivity.
To be honest, I couldn't tell you half the places I found actual research about them.
