Do Fish Sleep?

Look at your tank when the lights are out. Most of the time at night my fish are behind the rocks just hovering in one place. My goby goes under a rock all night. The dragnette has sand on top of it's head every morning so I think it must dig under a rock too though I don't see it.

Wouldn't they sink if they are just hovering in one spot or wouldn't they "hover" into a rock? I think my scotter blenny sleeps in the sand too. Thanks. Anyone else.

Although fish don't have eyelids, they fall asleep just as we do. Most sleep with the aquarium lights off, behind coral, live rock,or plants. While others will feel secure near an overflow box, power head,or near a return tube. But they all fall asleep at sometime.

My wrasse is a strange (and rare) species. I'll have to dig up the thread. Someone posted it in a thread and it was the first time I'd seen one outside my tank. It started life the same color as a cleaner and over the last year it has changed to a purple/pink back half, yellow band around the body at and just behind the gills and a bright blue head and a yellow line from its nose to the gills. Beautiful fish-and now I'm gonna have to find the thread.

Cool, I bet it looks beautiful. Don't trouble yourself with finding the thread. Does he "sleep" in a certain spot in the the sand each night? How deep is your sand bed?
Thanks.

My Naso tang never sleeps, at least I never saw him sleep. When the lights go out, he still moves around, when I go to sleep he still moves around, when I wake up, you guessed it... he's still moving. All my other fish sleep. The triggers between the rocks, yellow wrasse in the sand, Foxface behind the rocks, same with the Queen Angel.

Why do you keep breathing when you sleep?

So if is not "sleeping then what is it?
Thanks

sleep is technically defined as when consciousness is suspended. like you and i sleep and are fairly unaware of our surrounding environment. fish rest in that they are in a state thats energy saving and or safe. "Sleep" is typically found in higher animals and theres been soem debate about ceph's dreaming becuase they actually enter a fairly sleep like state and twitch like vertebrates do when dreaming. But no, fish do not technically "sleep". HTH.

That is different. If you are alseep then how do you know he is still moving around? Seems like most wrasses sleep in the sand. Is their a certain reson they do that?
Thanks.
