You don't really "need" one but it would definitely be helpful, especially if you're getting corals.

I would if i were you. When i had a 20g i had one b/c it helps keep your tank that much cleaner.

A whole lot of succesful reefs have been maintained in a 20g given enough LS and LR. What kind of skimmer are you going to get for a 20g? I assume there's not a sump involved?

I have a 12 gal nano and I use poly filter instead of a p.skimmer. It seems to do fine with weekly water changes.

I didn't have a skimmer on this tank for over a year and it did fine. I did do weekly water changes.

What size tank do you have? When you do a water change do the corals at the top of the tank not have water on them, and for how long?

It is a 20 g. I pull down any corals that might go dry with a 5 g water change.

Grumpygils,
That's a very nice looking tank! It looks bigger than 20g until you notice the shrimp in the middle. WHat kind of lighting, filtration, etc., do you have? Also, what other kinds of life are in there?
Thanks!

I have 195 W PC. 2 PHs and a back filter. I have since added a modified Skilter filter and skimmer which is sub par. I do regular water changes, so it doesn't need a filter. I have green star polyps, zoos, crocea clam, purple, green, red mushrooms, flower pot, green flat brain red green brain, brown and silver xynia, hammer, torch coral, bubble coral, colt, toadstool, montipora, yellow polyps, 2 sea horses, rg, shrimp, nemo snails, crabs, flame scallop, cleaner clam, frogspawn, orange favia, clove polyps, featherdusters and friggin bristle worms.
