No rim, no cap, no cover. My tank is open. I bought some acrylic sheets today and was going to put a 4-6" rim around the perimeter of my tank. Over kill? or good idea?
Do I need to concern myself with an open top tank? Jumpers possibly?

I like my top on because i do not have much evaporation with the top....I rarely have to do top offs

Open is best, but if you're worried put some eggcrate over the top. You still get the gas exchange and it does a good job at keeping most fish in.

will do. I think ill do a 6in lip,that will give about 4.5 inches of over hang past the tanks rim.

That sounds like a good plan. any fish has the potential to jump. I learned that lesson the hard way.

the only reason I would shy away from egg crate...it diffuses the lighting from my 250x3 MH's that will be going with this system.

You can custom cut them near the lights while still enjoying a relativly secure tank. nice lighting system BTW. one of my favorite fish recently jumped. I sure will miss it. anyways better safe is my motto now.

Thanks, it was a steal at $400.
Its PFO's professional brand $2500 system, quad electronic ballasts(too bad they went udner earlier this year).
Dual 72" T5's, 3x250MHs. w/cooling fans on both ends. It can be hanged from the ceiling, or mounted inside a tank top.
The bulbs are 3months old, so Ill be replacing them within the first 6-9months...but even still, it was a smoking deal for a first lighting system.

Can you post some pics when you’re done? I want to get a fire gobies but they are jumpers and my tank is opened. My tank runs on 82 degrees in the summer, I am afraid a lid will make my temp go up. Also anyone got any pics with the egg crate tops. Just looking for some ideas so I can get my self a gobies. Thank you.

Tell me about it, had a Lion fish jump out about 5 years ago. Wasn't even during feeding, he just decided to reach for the stars, and now hes in fishy heaven.
