alright guys i wanted to make this post saying DO NOT USE DHL....i shipped a package OVERNIGHT and it experiences an airline delay this morning in wilmington, OH and will now not be delivered until tomorrow...so as soon as i know how everything arrives i will be filing a claim....and i have talked to one LFS i frequent and they have quit using DHL because of these types of shipping...oh yeah i want to also note that the package was going from northeast alabama to Florida....now i worked at ups for awhile and i understand things goin through a distriubution center...ok...now that the rant is over here is a question....
what are the chances everything will be ok tonight is suppose to be 29* and i only put 1 24hr heat pack in the box...everything is double bagged, then wrapped with newspaper, in an insulated box, lid of the box is also taped shut to block any chance of light creaping in....what are the odds of survival???

I was about to ask what you're shipping, until I saw the temperature and the heat pack. Honestly, I wouldn't keep my hopes up. Even though the package is supposed to arrive before 24 hours, I use 40 hour heat packs for reasons just like what happened to you. I've had corals, including SPS, survive through 2 day shipping with below freezing temps outside.
I always use Fedex but shipping delays aren't rare for them either.

Well, there was a huge storm system over pretty much all of Ohio today. I think it might have been just a bad coincidence due to weather.
Not quite sure if it will survive or not.

the distribution center is in ohio so the lady says but im pretty sure even with ups or fedex if it is going to a neighboring state it does not go to louisville, ky to turn around and come back to the next state....and yeah it could be just a coincidence with the storm....but the place i talked to has quit shipping with DHL because of the CONTINUOUS shipping problems, such as deliveries not being there before the garunteed time and i am sure there are others....i ordered something that came dhl and the guy delivered it to the wrong house and it sat outside from 11am til like 330.....
VIPER- where do you get 40 hr heat packs???? everwhere i go the most they have is 24

just to let you know DHL will not cover any live corals unless you have a contract with them. they will only cover the shipping costs. I delt with this many times with them messing up.
I will never ship with DHL again only ups or fedex for me.
Also it may make it depending on the coral. if its lps or an sps it might not make it.
zoos they should make it since i have been shipping them 2nd day.

i told the lady i was shipping live goods and she didnt say anything about not covering it and the guy at the shipping counter said there is a default insurance of $100 so hopefully everything will be ok and i wont have to go through the insurance claim but i will definitely make a claim for my shipping money since it was freakin $80...but i shipped 2 rocks of mushrooms, 1 frag of zoos, 1 frag of palys, and 1 frag of GSP, and a green nepthea

well ya but when u file a claim and since u said it was live goods they wont cover it. its in the small print. i tried to get a shipment coverd for the 100 but the denied it.
But with the things u shipped i think it might just make it.
80 bucks to ship from Al to Fl. next time check to see what the ground rate is. normally things get there overnight and you pay like 10 for the shipping.

Ha. I bought a coral from another member here who lives in the Florida Keys.
UPS overnight it went to Louisville,KY before it came back down to Zephyrhills, FL. Figure that one out.

BTW. The coral is still doing fine peef.

yeah...the box was 16lbs....i havnt called to make the claim yet but i am going to try and think of something else i can say the package was so i can get my money back...i asked the guy at the counter if dhl doesnt ship live goods then why do i recieve them from dhl...he couldnt answer...next time i will just ship it 2 day instead of trying to overnight it but i wanted to overnight it this time because i was shipping so much and didnt want to risk everything

well when u check the shipping. look at ground. half the time it will get there next day and you pay like 10-15 instead of the 80.
But if u put on the shipping label live corals or anything like that they will use that to verify. so if you did that then it more then likely not be covered.
Wish u the best but i have dealt with this in the past and been stuck. only thing i got back was the shipping money.

I get heat packs made by uniheat online. A quick google search can give you a couple sources as I can't post links for you. It may take some additional searching, but you can find them pretty cheap at some places like $1 per pack. I typically buy several dozen at once though so perhaps it's cheaper in bulk.

I have had this same problem with FedEx and UPS,I have used DHL a fair number of times with no trouble.Shipping anything thats alive is a gamble no matter what company you use.

I agree with crookedantler. I have used all the shipping carriers USPS,UPS,Fedex and DHL and it is a gamble. Regardless which one you use things do happen.
Also as mentioned by viper_930 I would use the 40 hour heatpak or to play it really safe the 60 hour heatpak.
