And there's nothing to indicate at this point that Obama won't get voted in again.
I think Obama's back-tracking on his initial response was surprising and unique. You don't see presidents too often trying to mediate such situations. It shows the human factor to Obama, and the reason that many, I think, voted for him rather than the same ole run of the mill politician on a pedestal.
Truth is, in the best case scenario, I don't think that anything at all was served by arresting a non-criminal in his own house just because he was carrying on and verbally abusing an officer. Does it happen every signal day? Yes it does and procedurally, it may be fine to arrest someone for carrying on angrily; but in the best interest of the community that police officers serve, and in putting out a good image, something law enforcement must always do, arresting an irate citizen when a crime has not been committed, just because you can legally do it, is not always the best thing to do. If Gates was ranting in a public place, like a store, or parking lot, ok. But he was on his own property. I didn't particularly like that the police officer continued to ask Gates to step outside. This seemed a tad like a set up to me, since Gates had to be outside, ranting, in order to exercise the arrest. Once the officer got his identity, and was aware of the situation, there was no further need for officers to be at the property. I still do not believe that race had anything at all to do with it. If information from witnesses or police records are released, it may be the officers actions are completely warranted. Wait and see.
Anyway, I think the president did well on this one.
