when people ask for advice from me especially at work, where its always customers doing it, then either going somewhere else to buy the product, or buying something completely different....
or when they just don't get what i'm telling them, even tho it seems completely clear to me. like after i explain why they shouldn't take centrum or others like it, and they don't care that they're putting sh** in their bodies! i just don't get those people! lol

WHAT IS WRONG WITH CENTRUM and other similar vitamins including one-a-day, and anything else u can find at walmart, cvs, walgreens, etc.
First of all, it's good that you at least take a multivitamin, but you can take better ones. Centrum is made with artificial ingredients. the easiest way to see if a vitamin is artificial is to look at the source of vitamin E. now on centrum you have to look through the long list of ingredients at the bottom, and locate the words 'dl-alpha tocopherol'. the dl means it is artificial ingredients. which may come from things such as tar or plastic. if you find 'd-alpha tocopherol,' you have discovered a natural source vitamin e, which is usually derived from things such as soy. yes these vitamins are giving you plastic!!
Next you want to look in the second part of the list of ingredients, in the nutrition facts box. usually the vitamins and minerals are seperated from miscellaneous ingredients by a bold line. check the label for items such as tin and nickel. these are heavy metals. not good. a good vitamin should not have harmful metals in them such as these.
Now we will look at the % daily value. Look at your label. Is there anything above 100%? with most of the centrum vitamins, the answer is no, unless you have the performance, but it isn't much better. the most important percentages you want to look for are those for the b-vitamins. no more than 100% right? but that's what the FDA says you need right? they don't take into account that b-vitamins are water soluble. VERY water soluble. your body flushes out water soluble things when you use the restroom. so your body will flush out probably 90% of what centrum claims you are getting. so if you are only getting 10% of your b's, how is that 'complete from a to zinc'?? you also ask, why are b's so important? b vitamins are good for your energy and metabolism. definitely important.
Another ingredient you may appreciate is biotin. biotin is important for your hair, skin, and nails. this is also listed as a low percentage in centrum. i think about 10%. that's about all that is in the oil of olay vitamins too. you should find a vitamin that lists 100% biotin.
Now calcium. important for your bones and teeth. the FDA only lists 1000 mgs as the amount that everyone should have. but that varies by age and if you are pregnant or not. people 19-54 should take 1000mgs of calcium per day. anyone over 55 should take 1200 mgs. now you won't find all of the 1000mgs in most vitamins, unless you want to take 4 of them a day. that is because 1) calcium is big and 2) you shouldn't take too much calcium at once. your body will only absorb so much calcium at a time. that's why you should take it spread throughout the day. but your body CAN handle more than what is in centrum. 250-400 mgs at a time is not too much to ask. you CAN find a vitamin with 250 mgs of calcium in each pill.
you also want to beware of the binders and fillers in centrum and the like. these cause your body not to be able to break the pill down. which means you are getting even less of everything that is listed on the label. that's why they have found centrum

[hr]
still whole in septic systems (don't ask me how they know it's centrum lol).
you should look for a vitamin that is time-released. that means it should dissolve in 4-6 hours in your body. meaning you get more of the water-soluble b's, and your body has a better chance to absorb the calcium. your stomach does not absorb nutrients, your small intestine does, so you want the vitamin to make it there.
vitamin c is also water soluble. but not as much as the b vitamins. and there are things that help your body to hold onto vitamin c. so your multi should have 1) more than 100% of vitamin c and 2) ingredients such as quercitin or other bioflavonoids.
let me go find a couple of labels, and post them on here too.

these are the GNC brand women's ultra mega and mega men vitamins.
both have green tea for energy and antioxidant power. women's has cranberry for urinary tract. both have lycopene for the heart (it's good for men's prostate too) and the men's has saw palmetto for prostate.
these are just two of GNC's vitamins. they have over 20 different formulas and vitapaks, including children's and teens, over 50's, and some that aren't designed specifically for men or women. also liquid, chewable, capsule, and tablet form.
told ya it would be long! lol
