Dogface VS Stars & strips puffer - Which should I get?

As the title says... I just can't decide. I'm making a stocklist for my 180, and I'm torn b/w the two.
Which do you all recommend? and why?
THANKS

thanks batfish..
Also, I understand that they both get to about 13-14 in max. - so similar size overall...
what about being "messy"... I've read that PP puffers need a great skimmer b/c they are so messy. Are the dogface and S/S puffers as messy?

As far as the puffer; why not just get the one you want? Not much difference in effect on your tank. I think the idea that one messy eater can require a bigger skimmer in a 180 makes no sense. IMO, herbivores, like tangs, produce more total waste than carnivores, like puffers. They have to eat much more, because their diet is less nutritious...so produce more waste. Just like a 80lb sheep will poop much more than an 80 lb dog. When my puffers eat, any scraps are scarfed by other fish anyhow. On the puffer subject: IMO, a striped dogface puffer is a great, under-rated fish. Maybe because I'v enever seen a good pic of one; the pic on this site does the fish no justice. They aren't as big as the other two, inexpensive, hardy, very pretty and personable. Mine is as tame as a porky and a tank favorite.

great info... I didn't realize the real reason for the increase in waste. So maybe this could be made up for by supplementing diet or by soaking the food prior to feeding?
I hadn't looked into the striped dogface! I just looked up some pics. Looks awesome. Got a pic of yours you can post?
What is their max size?
The only thing I'm finding after looking for a little bit - it seems as they are not readily available... that usually the case?

I have a lot of pics in the camera; but still need one of my kids to post them. I'm a tech idiot; and that's fine by me. Here's a decent pic;(http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...%3Den%26sa%3DG) but mine (and others I've seen) have green eyes and black edging on the tail--prettier than this pic. I got mine from SWF.C; they often have them, but they just aren't very common. I suspect a lfs would prefer to sell porkys, they have so much "sales appeal"; but most folks don't realize how big they get. I think max size of a striped dogface is about 10", mine is about 6" and I've had him a while.
IMO, almost all food should be soaked in a vitamin supplement, like Selcon at least every 2nd day (or whatever). I'm absolutely convinced that the addition of these supplements has a lot to do with long-term fish life. I use 3-4 different ones.

yeah, that's one of the pics I found. Quite a beautiful fish. And if your fish looks better than that pic - wow - b/c I thought that pic was the best I found. Well, if only I could find the fish I'm wanting!
BTW - what other supplements do you use?

Right now I have Selcon, Kent Zoecon and SeaChem Vitality. I also use fresh garlic squeezed thru a garlic press.

One more thought on puffers. I also have a spiny box puffer (Chilomycterus schoepfi) and has all the personality of a porky, but only gets to be 10" or so. They have a rep of being rather difficult fish; but the one I have now and the one Katrina got have been very healthy, easy to acclimate fish; and has all the personality of a porcupine puffer. For some unknown reason, I've never had good luck with a porky; just unlucky I guess. I know they are easy fish and the spiny box was my 2nd choice after I lost 3 porkys in a matter of a few months. All from the same source, maybe cyanide, who knows. But the Spiny Box would be a 1st pick now.

Yeah, I've looked into these also, and wasn't sure about the difficulty issue.
I've heard it's hit/miss to put more than one puffer in a tank. Are yours in the same? Any probs with territory issues?

IMO, its always "iffy" whenever you mix fairly aggressive fish; but my 2 are together and no problems. I think 2 puffers, in a big enough tank, will be usually fine. They just don't seem to be as territorial as, say, large angels. They just want to hang out up front and wait for food.

If you're still debating on which one to get I'd def. go with a S & S puffer. I have both and with my experiences the ss puffer is a lot less aggressive and much more personable and doesn't eat cleaner shrimps like my dogface.

imo they will both eat your cleaner shrimp as a rule. Personally, I'd find a black dogface! Those are awesome fish. But my dogface was an awesome fish.

a stars and stripes puffer and a dogface aren't much smaller
I always thought G fowler puffers got close to 20 inches and dogfaces were more like 10 to 12. I might be wrong.

Wow! I hope not, I've had mine for about 3 years now and he's about 8 inches and hasn't grown much in the past year. I got him around 5 inches. my buddy's s&s puff. is about 12-13 inches, HUGE! and my dogface is the same size as my gfowl and I feed them all well, but maybe your right
