drilled tank question

I have a question about my drilled tank. Should i have some sort of rubber washers for where the pipes go through the holes? My kit didnt come with any, but it seems like it would leak without some sort of a seal.
Thanks

mine came with a rubber gasket and I used aquarium safe silicone on both sides of the gasket.

You will need bulk heads. You can get them in either slip or threaded. Your lfs should be able to hook you up or you can order them online if you know the size.

And no matter what size bulkhead or brand it should come with one gasket.
You shouldn't have to silicone anything - the bulkhead is water tight when installed properly.

Ok, thank you I now have the gaskets. I am posting the link to the directions that i have for this. It says NOT to glue the pvc pipes together. Wouldn't they end up leaking this way, or eventually start sliding apart?

What they are referring to is "Dry Fitting" your plumbing together. That is fabricating you plumbing without glue to make sure its going to work as a whole system.
After you do this, you will need to break it down are-assemble with glue.
"Use included thread male tapes on threads, use PVC glue only if you have to - you want to be sure you can undo your work and change later if they don't fit.
If you want to use a 45 degree elbow instead of 90 degree one, if you believe a flexible hose is easier to work with than a hard PVC, or if you prefer to use an adapter to reduce the outlet or inlet size, get from Home Depot - our plumbing sets are standard and fitting parts are easy to find on the market."

Ok, need help again. I have 2 white pvc pipes that go through my tank. Each one is threaded at the bottom, and there are 2 gaskets and an octagon shaped flat piece that screws on to compress everything together. I should put one washer on top(inside the tank), and one on the bottom(inside the stand), correct? When i do this i cannot

[hr]
the piece onto the pvc pipe, because there isnt room between the pipe and edge of stand. What am i doing wrong?
Thanks

Most bulkheads only require 1 gasket and it goes on the inside of the tank.2 would be a plus but not necessary. If you only have enough thread for one gasket then its ok to do that.
Here is a couple of other tips for you TC.This one is important, make sure the part of the bulkhead touching the gasket is flat and smooth "no burs" #2 and not so important but helpful.Use Plumbers Silicone Grease on the gasket,it will help to get a water tight seal.Make sure it is petroleum free.

I have plenty of thread, the octagon piece wont turn because of the stand. There doesn't seem to be enough clearance between the pipe and the back wall of the stand to

[hr]
that piece on the pipe

Ok i see what your saying now.You may have to tip the tank and install your bulkhead first ,then put it back flat.If the bulkhead nut is resting on the stand you may have to whittle some wood away. When you install the bulkhead make sure that the flat part of the nut is parallel to the back of the tank.As long as the hole isnt above the stand framing member your in good shape.

I've never seen the bulkheads with the strainers on them. I might have to use one for a closed loop. Do you know where you got them from?
those strainers look easy to get clogged. any comments on this?

So far since July "08" ive cleaned them once quickly with a tooth brush. Not because they where clogged just because i wanted to check and see if they where. They where not.
