Hiya, i have a little question about my dsb~ I notice that under the top level, discoloration seems to form, like, it looks like cyano(sp) under the sand up against the tank. Its usally green or red, I was just curious if this is natural or if there is a way i can keep it away, i looks kinda ugly! If its good for the dsb and tank then that is great, just curious is all :)

I have moved around the sand before, to like move around the discoloration and make it looks all white. Im pretty sure i shuldnt do that, but still curious heh =/

How long has your tank been set up? My sand bad isn't quite as thick as yours, but when I first set it up I also got the red growth near the top. I was told that this was good but wasn't given a good explaination as to what it was.
As to moving the sand around in a DSB, yeah, that's probably a bad idea. If your system was more established it could spell disaster. Maybe some more experienced aquarists can lend their expertise to answer your questions further.

The discolored areas are Cyanobacter. This is normal. Feel free to place a cover on that part of your sand bed, a strip of wood, whatever.

The top of my sand bed is just fine, no discoloration at all, it was just comming in on the sides like i showed in the picture. So now im going to cover it up as suggested , thanks a lot =) *Waterdog* my tank has been up for around 10 months now. Its been doing great and looks awesome, i just didnt like the look of that under the sand :p
