SSB
Pros -
Biologic nitrification to convert Ammonia to harmless Nitrite & Nitrates.
Provides habitat for detritus consumers & their larvae.
Looks are subjective but most consider it attractive.
Cons -
I can't think of any.
DSB
Pros -
Biologic nitrification to convert Ammonia to harmless Nitrite & Nitrates.
Provides habitat for detritus consumers & their larvae.
Provides habitat for denitrifying bacteria that can convert Nitrate into Nitrogen gas.
Cons -
The part exposed to light on the glass can grow excessive amounts of cyanobacter.
Many hobbiests believe it can become a nutrient sink and degrade water quality after awhile.
Depth of a DSB is dependent on the grain size of the sand. Generally 2.5" or more for sugar sized sand grains.

One 1" or less is about right for a SSB.
Another pro to a SSB is that you can remove and replace a lot easier than with a DSB if you should need to.
Some reefers remove and replace part of the sandbed on a regular basis.

sandbeds can become a "sink" for dead food and excess nutrients, by removing the sand they are avoiding a "crash" where the sandbed becomes oversaturated and no longer absorbs stuff but releases it back into the tank
Not saying this is a fact just what some people think and what they do.

gotcha.
Is there a reason why people opt for a DSB??? to me, a SSB looks much more benificial
