Dumb canister filter question

Hi I just bought a C-360 marineland canister filter about a month ago. I'm trying to take the top off so I can rinse the filter pads off & clean the impeller. The directions that came with it explain very well how to set up the filer, they don't however say how to take the top off. Can someone please tell me what im doing wrong? I've unpluged the filter, & i've moved the thing that they call the key into several positions yet still every time I try to take the lid off my floor gets a good soaking!! Thanks

1st...did you shut off your shut off valves?
2nd...disconnect hoses
3rd...take filter to sink
4th...lift latches on top.......and remove lid

No.... I thought you just had to lift up that thing they called a key & start taking the top off!!
Ok so how exactly do I shut off the shut off valves?

No it just has 2 black levers inbetween the intake tubes, my understanding was that they would shut off the flow.

do you have a pic?
You might want to look into ordering the valves pictured above....this way you can disconnect you canister from the whole thing...and take it to a sink

If memory serves me correctly you lift up the first black lever and then lift the "key" up and turn it one way or the other. That shuts off the flow and you should be able to lift that part out.
