Anyone out there have their ear pierced up in the cartilage? I had mine done 2 weeks ago and it is still pretty tender. My friend told me hers hurt for 6 months when she had it done! :scared: Is this common?

I did it myself and it only hurt for a few weeks. The only thing you have to watch out for is keloids. Are you sure it's not infected?

Cartilage piercings are very finnicky. Yes, it is indeed possible to be tender as the day you were pierced for up to six months.
Make sure you're not sleeping on the piercing's side, and do not touch it during the day. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR CARTILAGE PIERCING. There is no way to stress this enough. Even when you clean it there should be MINIMAL contact between your hands and the jewelry. I've lost a bunch of cartilage piercings due to the formation of hypertrophic scar tissue resulting from irritation due to too much touching - and scar tissue takes FOREVER to go away.
Also, make sure the holes around your piercing are not red or inflamed. If they are, you have an irritation - not an infection, but close to it. If you are very careful, irritation will not become infection. You know your piercing is infected if it is inflamed and oozing yellow or green material which has a strong odor.
Here's my secret to beautifully healed Cartilage piercings;
warm saltwater soaks.

I have trusted the folks at infinite with my piercings since i got into body mods, they are at the top of their game and are a huge credit to the industry.
Congrats on your new hole; if you work hard on pampering it, you'll have an awesome mod for as long as you like!

Thanks everybody. I was at the my DR's office yesterday and had him look at it. It is not infected. It is itching alot though. Does this mean it is healing? I thought I heard somewhere before that sometimes injuries (like scratches) itch when they are healing.
And how can I tell if I am getting a keloid?

Yes, it will itch. Keloids aren't too common but if a significant ring of surrounding tissue gets hard that's a pretty solid indicator. The swelling will go down and pain will subside, and that's when you can tell. All in all, if you keep it clean and resist the urge to play with it, I don't think that you should concern yourself with worrying about it. There's no reason to get medical student syndrome because it's a rare occurance.

ive had mine 7 years....... it will stop hurting after a few months. it wants to close itself back up but since you have a piece of metal in there it is scabbing over. the flesh will heal in awhile just be patient.

OUCH. How long ago was that?
I've never understood the point of piercings, but that's just me.
