Cartilage piercings are very finnicky. Yes, it is indeed possible to be tender as the day you were pierced for up to six months.
Make sure you're not sleeping on the piercing's side, and do not touch it during the day. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR CARTILAGE PIERCING. There is no way to stress this enough. Even when you clean it there should be MINIMAL contact between your hands and the jewelry. I've lost a bunch of cartilage piercings due to the formation of hypertrophic scar tissue resulting from irritation due to too much touching - and scar tissue takes FOREVER to go away.
Also, make sure the holes around your piercing are not red or inflamed. If they are, you have an irritation - not an infection, but close to it. If you are very careful, irritation will not become infection. You know your piercing is infected if it is inflamed and oozing yellow or green material which has a strong odor.
