Egg crate doesn't always work.

I had a Watchman Goby jump recently and decided to do the right thing and cover my tank with egg crate. Well, I replaced the Watchman and about two nights later can you believe that sucker figured out a way to jump through one of the the 1/2" or so square holes in the egg crate? I'm completely baffled.
I think I'm done with Watchmans!

I'm actually just guesstimating the size. It's the standard size that Home Depot sales. Regardless I can't believe the fish was that skilled at jumping through hoops.

fish can and will jump through the smallest opennings... the bigger question is WHY did he jump??? and then build a screen for it... you can find that at home depot too, in the window isle.. just make sure to get the plastic edge and not the aluminum...

And don't get regular window screen it will block too much light. Look for 3/8 or better yer 1/4 inch pond netting.

Heh, think I'm just gonna only get fish that are too big to fits through the egg crate.

Laugh if you want, but fish too large for getting thru the egg crate knock it up with their bodies and jump anyway. I had an $80.00 purple filefish do that....suicidal fish can't be kept. I had a Fairy wrasse that actually waited until I opened the egg crate to feed them, and then jumped behind the tank where I couldn't reach it if I wanted to. (I didn't notice it, until too late)
Those long bodied fish are just too hard to keep from killing themselves. IMO

I think that last statement hit it on the head. They jump by nature and instinct.

I have kept firefish alive for a month before they kill themselves...I think the fairy wrasse that waited for the top to be off while I fed them...those are the worse, I even had mesh on the egg crate, and had made a door to feed them, and it managed to kill itself in two days. I won't be getting such a fish again either.

I have 1 firefish in the 475 - and he's been in there for a year now....but his 2 cousins both jumped thru the eggcrate and died on the floor very early on. I'm afraid to add another - cause they do "play" by chasing each other and they're so fast - they can leave the water and jump feet thru air. Other fish can chase them too - but they are so fast they can just vanish.
